Hey out there!
I need help with my vlc media player.
Everytime i start it and load an video (not every kind but i guess avi files),
it crashes giving the following error message in my xterm:

Code: Select all

vlc: pcm_plug.c:384: snd_pcm_plug_change_channels: Assertion `snd_pcm_format_linear(slv->format)' failed.
Killed
I already tried:

Code: Select all

emerge -eva vlc

[ebuild R ] media-video/vlc-0.8.4a USE="X a52 aac aalib alsa arts bidi cdda dts dvd ffmpeg flac gnutls hal% httpd live matroska mp3 mpeg ncurses nls nsplugin ogg opengl oss png real% samba screen sdl skins% stream svga theora truetype v4l vcd vlm vorbis win32codecs% wxwindows xml2 xv -3dfx -avahi% -corba -daap -debug -dvb -esd -fbcon -ggi -joystick -libcaca -lirc -mod -shout% -speex -svg -xosd" 0 kB
and added

Code: Select all

>=media-video/vlc-0.8.4
to /etc/portage/package.mask and re-emerged. No sucess... Any help would be nice!

Ok I got it working again, I think.
The problem is the sound output. What I did was go into vlc's options and change the selected sound card from default to my specific one (in this case Nvidia nforce2 ac97 iirc) That seems to have solved the problem. You need to refresh the list of sound cards.
Have fun. :)

Still a problem with doing this. The built-in dmixing of >alsa-1.0 is lost
vlc takes over and until it is stopped, no other sounds can play.
the old behavior was better, it allowed dmixing (and hence multiple sources playing simultaneously) without having any to write any funky .asoundrc files

I'm still counting this as a problem.

There's a posting in bugs.gentoo.org that says the same thing. But they say it due to something in alsa_1.0.11_rc2. I'll file something on the alsa buglist and hope it gets fixed in the next rc

Happens here too. In the GUI, going to

Audio => Output modules => ALSA

And clicking "Refresh List", then changing "ALSA Device Name" from "Default" to any of the items that are now in the list, it fixes the crash problem. I couldn't find anything on bugs.gentoo.org. This is for version vlc-0.8.2-r2, the "stable" version in x86. Since it's the latest stable version for x86, it should be reopened and fixed.

I haven't tried the 0.8.4a version yet because it won't even compile

Code: Select all

!!! set-wxconfig: Error: Can't find normal or debug version:
!!! set-wxconfig:         /usr/lib/wx/config/gtk2-unicode-release-2.6 not found
!!! set-wxconfig:         /usr/lib/wx/config/gtk2-unicode-debug-2.6 not found
!!! You need to emerge wxGTK with unicode in your USE
Even though I have tried with that USE flag, and have wxGTK compiled and installed.

My ALSA:

Code: Select all

 * installed packages
[I--] [M ] media-libs/alsa-lib-1.0.11_rc3 (0)
[I--] [M ] media-sound/alsa-headers-1.0.11_rc3 (0)
[I--] [  ] media-sound/alsa-utils-1.0.10 (0.9)
