So, for anyone that was following this thread, I have another solution to the problem that I was havin as well.

I'm doing Stage 1 install on a 1.1 Celeron. I was getting the 'can't run locate/run i386-X-X-X' as well as everyone else. I checked my /etc/make.conf file and changed the CHOST setting ...

That was it...Changed my bios setting to User Type HDD and everything worked great!

I'll definately try this as soon as I'm done compiling MySQL.

Right now, I'm just mounted using the LiveCD to start installing the programs that I need to run. Worst comes to worst, I can just boot from the CD, mount the partitions and move on from there. No worries.

So I just had to let Xorg detect my mouse instead of messing with the settings.

I reemerged xorg-x11 and then everything worked swimmingly!
