Just noticed that Google released a new version of Google Earth Beta 4 for Linux dated November 1. Still does not work. Still hangs on the initialization screen.

/opt/googleearth/googleearth-bin

This is wrong. Because you need to set LD_LIBRARY_PATH
the correcty path is /usr/bin/googleearth, this is a wrapper that set
LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

I realized that last night. Calling googleearth-bin directly isn't setting the proper library paths. The most recent ...

Thats strange... how can a library disappear after upgrading kernel/drivers? Because the error is "no such file". I have that file and im using 2.6.17 and 8.29.6 on x86, g.earth works ok.
So if i understood correctly, it used to work ok and upgrading the kernel and therefore ati drivers made it ...

Google Earth and fglrx 8.29.6 won't load.

I recently upgraded my kernel to gentoo-sources 2.6.18, which requied an upgrade to ati-drivers 8.29.6. Now, when I start Google Earth, it shows the first splash screen, then just hangs. When I tried launching the binary directly with /opt/googleearth/googleearth-bin, I get:

Ok, to close this thread out entirely. I tried pulling the bd-claim patch out of the kernel, and got the error again.

To summarize: there were two problems causing my error message.

First, evms and dm-crypt were fighting over control of /dev/hda2 and /dev/hdc2 . I think evms was grabbing control ...

Fixed it. It turns out that switching from cryptsetup-luks to plain old cryptsetup fixed the problem. I don't know what the problem was, but manually adding the encrypted swap and adding it with the cryptfs setup both work now. I will file a bug report.

[edit]
Further research shows that genkernel ...

So I tested a new kernel with the bd-claim patch, and that didn't work. I now have no idea what is causing this problem. I wish cryptsetup gave more verbose error messages.

I found two websites that do a very good job of telling how to get good burns under linux. The same author has two sites, one for CD's and one for DVD's.

I ran the script and the files read properly with no errors. After researching the issue further, I found that it is a problem with reading past the last track on the cd. When I burned the cdr's using cdrecord, I didn't use the -pad and -dao options, which are apparently good things to do. I first ...

I looked at that. It looks kind of dated, since the new baselayout uses dm-crypt. That's also what I'm using now. I think it is a fight between evms and dm-crypt over who gets to control the partitions. I've tried telling evms to relinquish control of /dev/hd[a|c}2 in evms.config, but it still won't ...

[SOLVED] Encrypted swap with cryptfs gives "invalid arg

Whenever I try to create encrypted swap using cryptfs, it fails with "invalid argument" errors.

I just finished setting up my new server with evms and raid 1 root. I used genkernel to create an evms2 kernel and initramfs. I set aisde two 512m partitions per HD for swap space. Everything boots fine ...

Cups remote printing not working [Solved]

One of my remote cups clients quit working two days ago. Everything was running fine with my server sharing two printers, (an HP and the pdf generator) out to three notebooks. Two of the other notebooks still work fine. The amd64 machine does not. It now spools the print job and creates about 25 or ...

"Drupal-like" package for Postgresql

I'm looking for a good user frontend for a Postgresql database. I'm looking for something like what Drupal does for websites where one focuses more on design and content without having to write the raw code. I'm desigining a case tracking system for a law office, and don't have the time or ...

Unfortunately the disable_timer_pin_1 doesn't prevent the lockups on 2.6.14 for me. I eventually got everything running on 2.6.13 with no problems. disable_timer_pin_1 doesn't work for 2.6.13; I have to use the standard no_apic_timer option.

It gets even more interesting.

I tried downgrading kernels to 2.6.12 and 2.6.13 (both gentoo sources), and the touchpad disappears alltogether. It isn't recognized by gpm, isn't listed in /proc/bus/input/devices, and is generally AWOL. It shows up with no problem on 2.6.15-rc?-mm1 (the current mm ...

Synaptics Touchpad not working.

Yet another dead Synaptics touchpad. I have an Acer Ferrari 4005 running AMD64. A basic xorg.conf using just /dev/psaux and the mouse drivers works. But any xorg.conf using the synaptics features doesn't. I set the device to /dev/input/mouse0, and cat /dev/input/mouse0 shows garbage on the screen. I ...

Random Kernel Lockup on Acer Ferrari 4005 [Solved, sort of.]

I am having problems with random kernel lockups on my new Acer Ferrari 4005. It happens when I am working in the console and usually typing something. The console just freezes with no response at all. I can't ctl-alt-del, I can use the magic sysrq key, I can't do anything but hold down the power key ...

All you have to do is use the
gpg --edit-key (keyid/uid)
and then the setpref command to list, in order, the exact preferences for symmetric cipher, hash functions, and compression. You can pick from the choices shown in gpg --version. Set them like this

setpref S9 S10 H10 Z2 Z0

Then type ...
