Random Kernel Lockup on Acer Ferrari 4005 [Solved, sort of.]

  • Quote

I am having problems with random kernel lockups on my new Acer Ferrari 4005. It happens when I am working in the console and usually typing something. The console just freezes with no response at all. I can't ctl-alt-del, I can use the magic sysrq key, I can't do anything but hold down the power key to turn it off, then back on. It happens anywhere from one minute to 10 minutes after booting. There is no kernel "oops", no log output, no nothing at all. The console just suddenly freezes and that's it. I have no other processes running in the background. I am running gentoo sources 2.6.14-r4. I've also tried 2.6.14-r2.

Another problem is that the touchpad is not showing up as /dev/psmouse despite having the psmouse module in. I've tried the i8042.nomux option.

Any ideas?

Update:

Tried running 2.6.15-rc2-mm1 and the random lockups are gone. Never did figure out what in that kernel locked this notebook up.

Hi,

Basically, you can solve all this by adding: "disable_timer_pin_1" to your kernel command line.

Unfortunately the disable_timer_pin_1 doesn't prevent the lockups on 2.6.14 for me. I eventually got everything running on 2.6.13 with no problems. disable_timer_pin_1 doesn't work for 2.6.13; I have to use the standard no_apic_timer option.

Hey, I ran into this step too. I am surprised because your problems were mine exactly. I backed it up and i am currently reinstalling gentoo. It was a pain.

I also have Acer ferrari 4005 with kernel 2.6.14-r2, but I have not experienced any lockups at all.
Do you use some weird kernel parameters and/or options?

I started with the genkernel config, then started shutting options off as soon the problem started. The problem is that it is a completely hard freeze with no error messages, no outputs to the logger, no oopses with kernel dumps. The cursor stops blinking and the keyboard is unresponsive. The next thing to diagnose it would be to get sshd up and running and ssh into the computer after it freezes to see if there is a response. 2.6.15-rc1-mm worked fine, but I can't use it since the fglrx module won't compile against it. Just have to wait until 2.6.15 goes mainstream and fglrx updates to work with it.
