Well it probably depends on what, but I just tried going with adding =sys-devel/gcc-4.3.2-r2 ~x86 to /etc/portage/package.keywords, and bootstrap picked up on it , still didn't get through, but it should be working :D

Also Simba7, thanks for all your support, the system is working perfectly now.
I am writting this guide to help people set it up, and there is going to be an compression section. Actually there is going to be a section for every plugin I found.
Hope to get it ...

Yeah the box is up and running. I am going to make a wiki entry for this anyway. But just a question, did you configure the kernel by hand?
If yes, make sure your device drivers are ok, and "sata" don't use ATAPI. Atleast this is what helped me. Also, check the kernel-hacking, for "use 4 Kb stacks ...

Nice thread, I thought I'm gonna join the party!

I've been into linux for almost 6 years now, been drifting around the distros like a mad man, every 1-2 days had a new distro on my PC.
Well, app 5 years ago I came to Gentoo. I still tried some other flavours (curse me for that :D) and allways did ...

Hey folks!

I just did a stage1 install on one of my PC's (acting now as a server :D).
It's pretty easy and straightforward:

1)Follow the gentoo handbook, until you reach the chapter about the kernel.
2) do:
-: cd /usr/portage/scripts
-: ./bootstrap.sh (or "sh boostrap.sh")
3)do:
-: emerge -e ...

Hey folks!
sorry for not updating much, but I had no time :D
so, yesterday night I went and compiled the kernel, it's working (atleast it booted).
System seems to be fairly stable too, there is just one more problem I run into.

today when I woke up I looked at the system, to see a kernel-panic ...

nope, not really....Stage 1 is officially not supported anymore, it's still there, and actually it is just as fresh as it can be, since you compile the whole system...and if you do an emerge --sync before that... :D

Reiser4 Gentoo-sources not syncing

Hey folks!

I'm working on a test box here, and wanted to use reiser4 for the FS.
Did a stage1 install without any problem, then merged gentoo-sources 2.6.27-r4, patched that with the patch from: http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/edward/reiser4/reiser4-for-2.6/
I have reiser4progs merged ...
