HDD problems (possible OT)

I have been having intermittent problems with my computer. Every so often it just hangs mid process. I have tried all sorts of tweaks to no avail but i have just discovered the following in my dmesg

hda: DMA timeout error
hda: dma timeout error: status ...

emerge -u automake fauls

i seem to have an almost impossible problem updating one of my machines... emerge -uD world constantly fails right at the end of emerging automake (1.9.5) with the following error:

/bin/install -c -m 644 'configure.am' '/var/tmp/portage/automake-1.9.5/image//usr/share/automake-1.9/am/configure.am ...

emerge gtkhtml fails

i have just run revdep-rebuild which among other things wanted to re-emerge gtkhtml (this was following an insane rm -rf). however the revdep-rebuild fails at gtkhtml. i have tried emerging gtkhtml manually but it fails with the same error:-

I agree with stormcrowley. portage is in my view one of the greatest strengths of Gentoo, including the ability to further customise Gentoo ebuilds (in the portdir_overlay). can i just add that the gentoo community esp these forums and the available documentation and help are other great strengths ...

hardened php
