That whole part is done through the splashimage= directive in your /boot/grub/grub.conf.

I've never seen that directive prior to using gentoo so I think it's a gentoo add-on to grub...which is why you probably couldn't find much documentation on it.

By default it points to /boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz ...

Seems to me like each of these (mplayer, xine, and the rest) still needs work in the following areas:

DVD Playing:
mplayer - no DVD menus
xine - I've never had it successfully play a DVD
the rest - ogle has no 5.1 surround support with alsa

Streams:
mplayer - chokes on Realplayer and Windows ...

Look at the old Command & Conquer games...sure there are no countries named but the two sides are pretty clear...

Basically it doesn't matter if an app does work for you as much as if it doesn't work for somebody (anybody).

Apps are considered stable when they've worked for everybody for a period of time without any bug reports (I'm not a gentoo developer so I wouldn't know how long that time period is around ...

The error you're getting is an assembly language one, these are usually caused by CFLAGS that are incompatible with the assembly code sometimes used in packages. Try minimizing this

-O3 -march=pentium4 -funroll-loops -fprefetch-loop-arrays -pipe

to something like this

-O2 -pipe

The workaround allowed it to compile. I have a funny feeling that this has something to do with compiling perl with the "threads" option

The secret was in using openssl to create a server key + certificate
