ALSA + SBlive = No "Master" Volume Control

  • Quote

Post by POLAX » Sun Apr 18, 2004 4:09 pm

I have an SBlive 5.1 and am using it under alsa.

The "master" volume control does not control the final output of the card (i.e. if I mute "master" then no sound should be heard). So I have to fiddle with about 6 volume controls (master, pcm, wave, wave lfe, wave center, wave surround) in order to control the volume.

Anybody else have this problem?

Anybody have a fix or workaround?

I've seen this too - it seems to be a 'feature' of ALSA, especially alsamixer. One workaround would be to write a 'mute' script that saves the values of each channel somewhere, and allows you to restore them. I wrote one in perl for a single channel, but it's not available at the moment (machine it's on is powered off).

If you find a way of controlling all output channels with a single control, please post back here! :)

I too have this problem.

I cant find a simple way to change both front and rear speaker volume (pcm and wave suround) with a single control, other than writing a script for the volume buttons on my keyboard.

amixer set "Wave Surround" XX
amixer set "PCM" YY

where XX is 0-31 and YY is 0-100, or in percentages.

Also, you can set the ALSA xmms plugin to use the Wave Surround controller as volume control, if you want a semi-easily accessible slider for the rear speakers (gkrellm volume-plugin doesnt have Wave Surround)

I use 'gamix' for my volume control. If I scroll over to the right a bit, there's a set of three sliders, with a title above them 'EMU10K1 PCM'. Set them to slide in sync (down the bottom), and that does the trick. Then you only have to move one slider. Funnily enough this is seperate to the other PCM, playback, etc, controls back to the left.

what driver are you using?

is it the ALSA driver from within the kernel (works well) or the one that you emerge

I have always had problems with the emerged emu10k1 driver
#define HelloWorld int
#define Int main()
#define Return printf
#define Print return
#include <stdio>
HelloWorld Int {
Return("Hello, world!\n");
Print 0;
