Thanks! Most of my packages are binary and I don't have anything outdated. Are you you using X11 or Wayland? I'm on X11.

I tried the ebuild and it worked like a charm. I also tried enabling both mpv and vlc, it works and lets the user to select the backend in the kalarm configuration dialog. It ...

First, are you on stable or testing?Which version of kalarm are you using?
There are currently two in the gentoo repo, 25.12.3 (testing) and 25.12.2 (stable).
25.12.2
Open disclosure: I am using my own custom ebuild for kalarm version 25.12.2 so that I can avoid mpv. (I am using vlc as a sound ...

Issue with kalarm 25.12.2

I have a recent problem with kalarm. It won't play sounds.

When I edit an alarm and hit "Test", nothing happens. No sound and no error messages anywhere. But when I close the dialog, kalarm hangs and I have to kill it.

The only available audio backend is mpv.

I have no issues with other sound ...

Yes these are related but separate as @pietinger says. Sorry didn't think about a link.

[SOLVED] Emerging from a clean slate, stil have conflicts.

This is related to this question https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1177162.html but is a separate one.

I have removed all of my package.use and package.accept_keyword, and trying to rebuild everything from a clean slate. Somehow I'm still getting a few slot conflicts

emerge -pg --emptytree ...

Re: Fixing a broken install

but without any actual information/output anyone would just be blindly guessing...

I don't think a huge list of slot conflicts or my portage info would be of any use to anyone. I am interested in a general procedure. Something like "remove all /etc/portage/package.*; remove all use flags from ...

[SOLVED] Fixing a broken install

After lots of package.accept_keywords and package.use customizations and a few careless `emerge --nodeps` I have a very broken system. Cannot emerge -avuD @world, cannot emerge @preserved-rebuild because of numerous slot conflicts. How do I untangle the mess? I'm willing to undo the customizations ...

New installkernel user, dracut problem?

Just tried the installkernel thing. The system won't boot with this error in rdsosreport.txt:

Failed to mount -t ext4 -o rw,relatime,ro,ro /dev/disk/by-uuid/<whatever> /sysroot

Now this list of options looks strange. I tried to mount the disk from the repair shell with just -o rw and its OK. But ...

[SOLVED] A problem with preserved libraries

I have gone through the usual update->depclean->preserved-rebuild route. however Portage insists that I still have a preserved set:

Broken kalarm-24.08.1

For the other 2 persons running KDE: this version of kalarm is broken. An attempt to play a sound results in

org.kde.pim.kalarm: AudioPlayer::play: Failed to play sound with VLC: <path to sound file>

and then the whole application becomes extremely slow and unresponsive. This is confirmed e.g ...

Here's the thing. libcanberra cannot play mp3 at all. It can play wav and ogg files only. It's all in the source code.

libcanberra's last change was 12 years ago. I'd say for a program that is supposed to play sound files it probably wasn't such a great idea to go with this library. It is designed ...

That version of kalarm is using media-libs/libcanberra for sound output. What are your use flag settings on that?

Edit: I added gstreamer and sound, still no dice. canberra-gtk-play also says data corrupt. Libcanberra is a ...

Kalarm in Plasma 6

kde-apps/kalarm-24.05.2:6::gentoo has lost its ability to play mp3 files. It says "Unsupported audio format, or corrupt data" (and gives a warning sound, so sound by itself is working). It is not corrupt data, it's all mp3s and kde-apps/kalarm-23-whatever worked just fine with these file.

How can ...

I'm probably the only one with this problem but...

I use kalarm to wake me up. Have done that for years and years.

The handbook says:

If the Phonon audio backend currently in use supports it, you can fade the volume

And that was the case until recently. Phonon supported fade, and there was ...

Almost removed my sysvinit

I always was a sysvinit user.

After today's update, emerge --depclean wanted to remove sys-apps/sysvinit. Good thing I caught it and stopped, otherwise I guess my system would become unbootable.

I noticed that sys-apps/openrc did not have either sysvinit or sysv-utils USE flags set. I added ...

I have a problem with most-5.1.0 and most-5.2.0. They do not display colors as set in my config file.

color overstrike black black
