Almost removed my sysvinit

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Almost removed my sysvinit

I always was a sysvinit user.

After today's update, emerge --depclean wanted to remove sys-apps/sysvinit. Good thing I caught it and stopped, otherwise I guess my system would become unbootable.

I noticed that sys-apps/openrc did not have either sysvinit or sysv-utils USE flags set. I added sysvinit and remerged sys-apps/openrc. I also added sysvinit to the world file, for a good measure.

What just happened? Did I do something wrong?

OpenRC defaults to having +sysvinit. If that was off, you either turned it off explicitly, or you're using USE=-* which is unsupported.

Thanks! Yes apparently I had USE=-*. I probably added it way back when the world was new.

Sometimes experimental is mandatory indeed:

Code: Select all

 * Found these USE flags for sys-apps/openrc-0.53:
 U I
...
+ + sysvinit : control the dependency on sysvinit (experimental)
...
I'd rather favor more explicit:

Code: Select all

+ + sysvinit : control the dependency on sysvinit (experimental removal)
Thks 4 ur attention, interest & support.
USE="-* ..." in /etc/portage/make.conf here, i.e. a countermeasure to portage implicit braces, belt & diaper paradigm
