Definitely the community. The last post I made before this one was years ago and I can still see the community helping people and having fun simultaneously. :)

I still remember browsing the forums in links (or lynx...I can't remember anymore) when I first tried building it and I had removed windows ...

I was thinking primarily of the situation after I'm booting from the hard drive. But perhaps even then there are no services that allow for an attack. The first thing I did after this point was to install shorewall, but there was some sort of problem with the install and that took awhile.

Unless ...

I tried another distro on a lark and it installs to it...(Ubuntu Server 7.10). However, I'm much more a fan of Gentoo (kinda more of what I know). Figuring what they loaded different is a challenge though. I think I've tried loading all I could find from lsmod on the working setup to get it to read ...

was there ever a solution to this? I've just hit the same problem. >.<
I never solved it, and I just live with it. Just curious, what equipment are you seeing this problem on: a Lifebook or something else?

I never did upgrade my firmware, because I never got the flashing tool to work (don't ...

I just grepped over my log and have about 2,000+ pages of attempts ranging back from August of this year.

All of them lame dictionary attempts. Does reporting these IP's to their respective ISP's help anything?

sometimes but not often. I generally report those IP's to them anyways...might as ...

I can change it to listen to another IP. The question then becomes, what specific IP should I be setting it to listen to, and for that matter, why is the default config 0.0.0.0?

Is sshd already running? check your processes to make sure.

It's probably best to set it to listen on a specific IP that you have instead of 0.0.0.0.

This might not be helpful, but I do recall there being a /etc/init.d/apache2 zap to forcefully kill it. I'd say go through your /var/log/apache2/error_log and see if it's segfaulting or something.

zap for any service in init.d is to reset the status...e.g. if the service died but it didn't ...

Re: nmap says: Host seems down

I have (an) open account(s) on my system. I put them there to see who would login and wait and see what they try to do. I just don't get why people are so scared. They shouldn't be able to get root access from the account. I have it set up with limits and outgoing firewall so they can't use an IRC ...

Re: Why?

Can anyone tell me why on Earth anyone is running a damn SSH server publicly?! For goodness sake, if you need admin access to your server outside then install yourself a damn VPN to do it such as OpenVPN or an IPSec one.

If you're behind a firewall that restricts outgoings that blocks VPN ...
