Good to see more people experimenting with Gentoo/FreeBSD! :)
Now, onto business... The amount of time it takes for packages varies. gcc is a well-known large package which will often take a number of hours to compile, even on relatively modern systems. Here's how long it took on my 2.4GHz P4 ...
1) It's serious. 2) Short answer: No, Long answer: we have almost all of Gnome keyworded, or available with patches in Bugzie. We have Xfce-4.4.1, too. I dislike KDE, but I'm pretty sure that was the first DE which worked on Gentoo/FreeBSD. And those are just the major DEs, we're keywording ...
I just tested FreeBSD because I feel the Linux kernel has become very inconsistent lately. What a disappointment that was! It was like a visit to the stone age. Anyone who is complaining about upgrade problems in Gentoo should try to upgrade to Xorg 7.2 in FreeBSD, what disaster! And be prepared to ...

More complex answer: Unfortunately, over the last month or so, many of the GWN team have been extremely busy, with house moves, new jobs, exams, and so on. We are working to get a new GWN out ASAP.
If you want to see more GWNs with more articles, why don't you send us articles ...
If I were to switch to another distro/operating system, I would (at this moment in time) almost definitely switch to FreeBSD. No questions about that. If I wanted to use a binary distro, then I think that Arch Linux would be my distro of choice - I used it for about a year on a 333MHz P2 laptop with ...
I know this is a somewhat old thread, and that one is not really supposed to bring old threads back to life again, but I'm kinda addicted to seeing other people's desks :)
Here's mine: http://descartes.01welp.co.uk/~welp/p3170032.jpg http://descartes.01welp.co.uk/~welp/p3170033.jpg (My desk is too ...
Unless you have lots and lots of AMD64 asm and GCC4 knowledge, you're going to have a hard time getting it going. Unless you stick with GCC3.x, that is.
I never use the handbook anymore. Unless I'm doing a 'different' install for the first time; I used the Gentoo/FreeBSD handbook to install Gentoo/FreeBSD (duh...), as I've never done that installation before.
Just to ensure I don't forget anything though, I always use the "down n' dirty' install ...
Too daunting for someone who's been running Linux for 3-4 years?! I started using Gentoo about 2 months after being introduced to Linux, and about 15 months on, became a developer... 8O I still haven't even been using Linux for more than two years...
Just goes to show how good Gentoo is at teaching ...
You might want to think about becoming an AT (Arch Tester) for your chosen arch - I know that Gentoo/AMD64 and Gentoo/x86 are always looking for new ATs, and Gentoo/Alt (Gentoo/{FreeBSD,OpenBSD,etc}) currently seem to have... no ATs. 8O
And, as the rest of 'em said, come along to Bugdays, post ...
I thought there were supposed to be 10 devs in the poll? In fact, did you just take the list of devs that Conan nominated? 8O
agaffney (installer++) wolf30xx (I don't remember the right numbers :( halcy0n (x86 team, qa, gcc stuff but I don't remember if he retired this year or last year ...

I don't think that any developer or contributor can be nominated "Best developer of the year". Some developers might do little work, but the work that they do is exceedingly difficult; some developers might make thousands of commits a day, but they're just doing the easy stuff that anyone can do ...
If you're building your own kernel, you'd generally want to build everything in. There are, as jmbsvicetto said, notable exceptions, such as the ALSA drivers and NIC drivers (although I always build mine in :))
I'd suggest you take a nice look at the links nightmorph posted, as well as the Gentoo ...
