A) I didn't have a problem with installing Gentoo, although I defragged my Windows parition and used its native (gasp) partitioner to give me a linux partition. I don't think its dangerous long as your're careful, but I see your point none the less

When I said that it is a dangerous thing for ...

Gentoo's not for everyone. And it's certainly not for me.
I'm a hardcore FreeBSD/NetBSD user and I can't see why Gentoo just didn't pickup pkgsrc. Since 2006.0, the installation is a dangerous thing for _anyone_ running a multi-boot environment. No modules for UFS filesystems and it's a pain to run ...

Do GRP exists at all in 2006.1 ?

I just downloaded the full livecd-i686-installer-2006.1.iso. At least it contains a portage snapshot but no stage3 tarball which I'm downloading now.

I mounted the squashfs image in the livecd to find the largest files and I can't see any tar.bz2. How does GRP packages exist in the livecd ...

Well at least in germany you could (not avoid to) look at nice tits in nearly every store and/or place where magazines can be bought. No protection for minors in any way (only hard pornography is 18+). Nevertheless we (as beeing the mods) don't allow nudity in the forums because of the physics in ...

Not at all. Nazi or fascist thought isn't inherently German, just because at some time we used to be very good at it. England has its fair share of the type, France has, I bet Russia has, too. Hell ...

I don't believe in censorship. Ideas should not be underground in order to discuss (and possibly dismiss) them. Most natzies online are kids (hardly +24) and it's hard for them to repress the opportunity they enjoy to cause a little restlessness. Or maybe they're just trying to figure why some ...

We all know neo-nazis are sexually repressed guys, just like A. Hitler. I even call them "natzies". My parents came from Portugal because of the fascist dictatorship of Salazar (very much like Franco in Spain), and they were supported by Herr Führer. One day I was browsing David Irving's site and in ...

Clock set to local time, not UTC

I have 3 different OS'es on my machine and I have managed them to share the clock in local time. How can I make Linux be aware of this when I create /etc/localtime ?

If you've got the livecd(gnome) consider yourself lucky ir runs, if it runs. I've tried it from
2 sources and on both it loses the grip on the screen display at the last moment.
It may be the X resolution not matching your hardware. It happened to me. Try lowering it with Ctrl + Alt + '-' or go ...

Yeah, it may be... But image.squashfs has a complete filesystem inside, just as an ISO does. They are referenced in the installer, and the 2006.0 handbook:

Quoting http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/2006.0/handbook-x86.xml?full=1 (emphasis mine):

new_to_non_X86: Sorry, I didn't see post #2 when I posted #3.

Yes, I know that. But I don't see any hints in the handbook on how to install the GRP packages that I don't see in the 2006.0 live cd as they were with 2005.1. When I browsed through the installer's dialog menu, there were options that signalled some packages as being GRP and a warning that said ...

Where do the GRP packages live in the 2006.0 x86 live CD ?
I'm using the manual way to install because the installer gave me problems. It appears that the only way to install these is through the installer (either gtk or dialog) and I fear these packages exist scattered through the various files in ...

Is there an errata page on this Gentoo "installer" ?

Not sure why you would need to write or even read your BSD's partitions during the install. You could write your stage3 tarball in one of your ext2 partition from BSD and then install.
The problem is that there's no such thing as "disk label" in Linux. Linux assigns partitions letters in an ...

Installing Gentoo 2006.0 x86 with {Free,Net}BSD installed

I can't install Gentoo on my system with the first 3 primary partitions assigned to the BSD's and the last primary partition being a DOS extended partition with 5 ext2 logical partitions inside where I want to (hopefully) install Gentoo. The problem is that the livecd kernel doesn't have UFS support ...

Is it supported?
kde 3.4.2 is in portage, although it is masked by the ~ arch keyword. Just unmask it by inserting some lines in /etc/portage/package.keywords and then run emerge kde-meta .

Please don't try to use ...

Boot takes 1,5 min (my gentoo takes 20~30 sec. and ubuntu 30~40 sec.) X+gdm takes almost a full minute to get ready!
The default delay for the loader is 10 secs. Change it with:

There are many things that could be configured to make it even smaller ...

I'd suggest you enforce the Linux's view of your HD's geometry at install time. Cylinders / Heads / Sectors.

Don't forget to backup the MBR just in case...
dd if=/dev/hda of=mbr bs=512 count=1

gentoo 2005.1 (errata?) + kde 3.4.2

Hi, I'd want to install 2005.1 on a Pentium 4.
I heard there's a minor bug in the tarball permissions. Is there another I haven't heard of?

Also, I have FreeBSD 5.4 installed and I downloaded the sources to kde-* 3.4.2

The problem is that, precisely, new emerge's aren't using the new USE. I've just tried to emerge gnupg without "--usenew" and it surprises me that it wants to emerge xorg-x11 too. It appears that the emerge database needs an update of this variable on each non-installed package. It would be a pain ...

I started with Linux, but now I'm using FreeBSD for almost everything. It caught me, and I will just let it flow (because I'm surprised at times that I'm not using Linux anymore on my PC).

I still don't trust burncd(8) because it failed to burn the gentoo images (I don't know if this is a problem ...
