Is it safe to uninstall to resolve the conflict?

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Hi, ALL,

Code: Select all

IgorReinCloud igor # emerge -pv samba

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#blocked
Is it safe to uninstall the blockers (talloc and python-exec)?

Thank you.

I'm not sure if removing python-exec would be safe. Is your system up-to-date? There was an eselect news item about python-exec package move and related blockers (2013-11-07-python-exec-package-move) that might be relevant.

Besides the news item, it might work to manually upgrade talloc by itself; as the rest of the output doesn't seem to actually contain a blocker about it.

It should be consider always unsafe to remove anything to remove a block.

Another method is to bypass the block by blinding portage : --nodeps
If portage cannot see deps it cannot see the block, so emerge listoffiles -1 --nodeps will upgrade all packages without the block.

It's also dangerous as upgrading a lib don't grant you the new version should be compatible with previous one, but having a new lib is still better than a removed one.

And the only safety should be quickpkg the package before using the hammer :)

Guys,
Thank you all for the reply.

I did manual upgrade of talloc as it didn't depend on anything.

But python-exec is different:

Code: Select all

IgorReinCloud igor # emerge -pv --depclean python-exec

Calculating dependencies... done!
  dev-python/python-exec-0.3.1 pulled in by:
    app-emulation/virtualbox-4.2.18 requires dev-python/python-exec:0/0=[python_targets_python2_7(-),python_single_target_python2_7(+)]
    dev-python/numpy-1.6.2-r2 requires dev-python/python-exec[python_targets_python2_7(-),-python_single_target_python2_5(-),-python_single_target_python2_6(-),\
        -python_single_target_python2_7(-),-python_single_target_python3_1(-),-python_single_target_python3_2(-)]
    dev-python/pycrypto-2.6-r2 requires dev-python/python-exec[python_targets_python2_7(-),-python_single_target_python2_5(-),-python_single_target_python2_6(-),\
        -python_single_target_python2_7(-),-python_single_target_python3_1(-),-python_single_target_python3_2(-),-python_single_target_python3_3(-)]
    media-libs/mesa-9.1.2-r1 requires dev-python/python-exec[python_targets_python2_7(-),python_single_target_python2_7(+)]
    x11-libs/xpyb-1.3.1-r1 requires dev-python/python-exec[python_targets_python2_7(-),python_single_target_python2_7(+)]

>>> No packages selected for removal by depclean
Packages installed: 963
Packages in world: 514
Packages in system: 44
Required packages: 963
Number to remove: 0
Should I try to upgrade all those dependencies? Will there be any more issues with such upgrade?

Thank you.

If you believe your system to be in an incorrect state, consider to do a world upgrade instead with `emerge -auvDN @world` and increase the --backtrack= value when needed. Upgrading the reverse dependencies by themselves could indeed cause more issues; an when doing so, there could be more reverse dependencies requiring an upgrade or rebuild as well up to a point that a world upgrade is the easier approach to resolving it.

Hi, TomWj,
Yes, it is probably easier. But.....

I want to stay with GNOME2/GTK+2 for now. I also want to stay with python 2.7.
The reason being: I'm a developer and as all old-school developers I prefer to test my programs on the older libraries. ;-)

But the problem is that GTK+3/NOME3 is now stable and I will have to upgrade those with the world update.

Thank you.

[EDIT]
But besides that there are errors:

Code: Select all

IgorReinCloud igor # emerge -avuDN @world

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!

!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:

It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.

For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:

You can follow the advice in the output:
The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details)
# required by gnome-base/gnome-control-center-3.10.3
# required by gnome-extra/hamster-applet-2.32.1-r1
# required by @selected
# required by @world (argument)
>=media-libs/libcanberra-0.30-r1 gtk3

Use --autounmask-write to write changes to config files (honoring
CONFIG_PROTECT). Carefully examine the list of proposed changes,
paying special attention to mask or keyword changes that may expose
experimental or unstable packages.

!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy ">=app-i18n/ibus-1.5.2" has unmet requirements.
- app-i18n/ibus-1.5.5::gentoo USE="X gtk introspection nls python -deprecated -gconf -gtk3 -test -vala -wayland" PYTHON_SINGLE_TARGET="python2_7 -python2_6" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 -python2_6"

The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
python? ( any-of ( deprecated ( gtk3 introspection ) ) )
The first one you can do by passing --autounmask-write to emerge, then run dispatch-conf or etc-update; the second one you can do by setting either USE="deprecated" or USE="gtk3 introspection", the latter seems more sane to me to avoid deprecated functionality that would be removed. An alternative would be to disable python, as it would stop requiring these USE flags; but that last thing sounds like a bad idea unless you know what you'r doing.

TomWij,
You seems to miss my point: I want to stay with GTK+2/GNOME 2.
So, if I update world, I will update to GTK+3.

Thank you.

[EDIT]
Or maybe I can simply manually upgrade python-exec and then re-emerge its dependencies?

Yes, the alternatives take that into account, you can alternatively enable USE="deprecated" (although that will be removed as unsupported in the future) or USE="-python" (but as Python is important, that might be malicious advice).

Temporarily, setting USE="deprecated" might work; towards the future, looking for alternatives to GNOME 2 (eg. MATE) might be more interesting to keep support. Though, some of those alternatives might as some point switch to GTK+3; such that these alternatives, by themselves, don't lose their respective upstream supports. Is it GNOME 3, GTK+ 3 or both that you try to avoid?

TomWij,
Both. ;-)

And like I said maybe manually upgrading and then re-emerging the dependencies will solve it?

Thank you.

It would work; however, it's unsure which amount of time that will take to make the reverse dependencies work out. Consider to use one of the GNOME 3 masks; in doing so, the world upgrade should be able to work again.
