I'm not sure if removing python-exec would be safe. Is your system up-to-date? There was an eselect news item about python-exec package move and related blockers (2013-11-07-python-exec-package-move) that might be relevant.

Besides the news item, it might work to manually upgrade talloc by itself; as the rest of the output doesn't seem to actually contain a blocker about it.

It should be consider always unsafe to remove anything to remove a block.

Another method is to bypass the block by blinding portage : --nodeps
If portage cannot see deps it cannot see the block, so emerge listoffiles -1 --nodeps will upgrade all packages without the block.

It's also dangerous as upgrading a lib don't grant you the new version should be compatible with previous one, but having a new lib is still better than a removed one.

And the only safety should be quickpkg the package before using the hammer

If you believe your system to be in an incorrect state, consider to do a world upgrade instead with `emerge -auvDN @world` and increase the --backtrack= value when needed. Upgrading the reverse dependencies by themselves could indeed cause more issues; an when doing so, there could be more reverse dependencies requiring an upgrade or rebuild as well up to a point that a world upgrade is the easier approach to resolving it.

Yes, it is probably easier. But.....

I want to stay with GNOME2/GTK+2 for now. I also want to stay with python 2.7.
The reason being: I'm a developer and as all old-school developers I prefer to test my programs on the older libraries.

But the problem is that GTK+3/NOME3 is now stable and I will have to upgrade those with the world update.

The first one you can do by passing --autounmask-write to emerge, then run dispatch-conf or etc-update; the second one you can do by setting either USE="deprecated" or USE="gtk3 introspection", the latter seems more sane to me to avoid deprecated functionality that would be removed. An alternative would be to disable python, as it would stop requiring these USE flags; but that last thing sounds like a bad idea unless you know what you'r doing.

Yes, the alternatives take that into account, you can alternatively enable USE="deprecated" (although that will be removed as unsupported in the future) or USE="-python" (but as Python is important, that might be malicious advice).

Temporarily, setting USE="deprecated" might work; towards the future, looking for alternatives to GNOME 2 (eg. MATE) might be more interesting to keep support. Though, some of those alternatives might as some point switch to GTK+3; such that these alternatives, by themselves, don't lose their respective upstream supports. Is it GNOME 3, GTK+ 3 or both that you try to avoid?

It would work; however, it's unsure which amount of time that will take to make the reverse dependencies work out. Consider to use one of the GNOME 3 masks; in doing so, the world upgrade should be able to work again.
