Gentoo Forum RSS Feed

  • Quote

Post by wheerdam » Mon Oct 20, 2003 3:04 pm

Does this forum has RSS Feed? I have RSS Reader installed along with Mozilla Firebird Browser and I would prefer to read / check the forums using it (instead of going to the forum's Index page). I know that phpBB has this feature, but I don't know whether Gentoo forums have it. Thanks! :)
I'm weird, damn.

I didn't know that phpBB had RSS feed, it would be amazing to look at the forums in the sidebar!!!

I would love to be able to get my forum fix via RSS.

Does phpBB 2.0.6 have this feature? If so, could we enable it :P !

Speaking of phpBB, did the upgrade to 2.0.6 fix all of the forum woes? Or are there still issues that need to be fixed?

phpBB 2.0.x does not have this feature, though it is available as a mod. If this feature is available in (vanilla) phpBB 2.2, we will certainly look at implementing it.

Mozilla (FireBird in my case)
There are also rss readers that act as docklets and other forms

Is there any reason why you can't just use the mod? It's just that it's quite inconvenient to have to go to the forums and click 'posts from last 24 hours' all the time when an RSS solution is simple and elegant. I'd think a feed would save bandwidth, as well.

I have ~50 feeds set up on on Straw, and having a "search_id=newposts" feed would rock; this shouldn't be too hard since the RSS spec allows authentication.

Just out of curiosity, why are you, and others, opposed to modifying phpbb? It's not that difficult. Is time an issue? Even though phpbb is probably the best forum (IMO), it lacks some basic stuff.

I am completely familiar with phpbb's code. It's not that difficult.

This has been asked and answered numerous times, so I've expanded the FAQ entry.

A 1.1. Yes, we modified search. "We had to change the search code to help it scale more. The forums were literally collapsing under the load of the old code. We spent the time required to get it to a state where it was operational again." With each customized modification to phpbb code that is made, more effort is required to upgrade to new versions of phpbb. As such, unnecessary modifications will not be made.
Effort? Who's effort? Are you shorthanded with help on these forums in terms of webmastering? If so, ask for help. Hell, I'd be happy to help out but I know that's not possible. phpBB provides "upgrade mods" in consideration for phpbb forums that have been heavily modified: http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/catdb.php?cat=48

I have 2 sites in which I run heavily modified phpbb. In each case, the upgrade mod takes up about 20 minutes.

But, of course, it's entirely up to you guys. :)

Effort defined as anything beyond installing the new version.

Here is a little PHP script I wrote for a friend. It just grabs the http://forums.gentoo.org/search.php?search_id=last page and shows it in RSS format.

http://mcd-s.com/rss/gentoo.rss.php

You can pass it a comma delimited list of forums to exclude, for example:
http://mcd-s.com/rss/gentoo.rss.php?exc ... an,Italian

I can expand it to do more if there is a demand ...
Weeks of coding saves hours of planning.

To whom might be interested, I made up a php5 RSSReader class, you can see it at work here. It works ok with RSS0.91,0.92,1.0 and 2.0.

Gentoo GLSA can be read there.

Alternatively, you can get the source here.

If you got any feedbacks, they will be welcome :)
