[PALUDIS] Support thread (current v. 0.30.*) - Part 5

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

PALUDIS SUPPORT THREAD - 0.30.0 is in the paludis repository and gentoo tree
Many news, so just take a look here to what's new:
  • News for Paludis
  • ChangeLog
  • IMPORTANT

Please report bugs to trac, or use the paludis-user mailing list if you're not sure. Any reports made here will likely not been seen or fixed by Paludis developers.
  • ABOUT

This thread is the part 5 of the old Paludis Support thread - Part 4. It has been split with the upcomming 0.30.* versions of Paludis.

This front post will be updated from time to time. The old first post will not.

    Paludis is a portage alternative.

I created this thread for everybody that has problems with using paludis or has something useful to contribute to others about paludis.
Paludis is different than portage in command line and configs differ, too.
Any help, info, shortcut, howto or a tip is welcome here.

You may want to fix the "about" section...
My emerge --info
Have you run revdep-rebuild lately? It's in gentoolkit and it's worth a shot if things don't work well.

I got the same error with some other packages. To solve the problem, I recompiled libtool.
It isn't enough to win - everyone else must lose, and you also have to rub it in their face (maybe chop off an arm too for good measure).

I don't know where enlightenment.eclass came from because:
# equery b /usr/portage/eclass/enlightenment.eclass
[ Searching for file(s) /usr/portage/eclass/enlightenment.eclass in *... ]
I've other problems wiht eclass files, but I think are not related with the errors above:
# emerge -pv e_dbus
* Overlay eclasses override eclasses from PORTDIR:
*
* '/usr/portage/local/layman/kde/eclass/kde4-base.eclass'
* '/usr/portage/local/layman/kde/eclass/kde4-functions.eclass'
* '/usr/portage/local/layman/kde/eclass/kde4-meta.eclass'
*
* It is best to avoid overridding eclasses from PORTDIR because it will
* trigger invalidation of cached ebuild metadata that is distributed with
* the portage tree. If you must override eclasses from PORTDIR then you
* are advised to run `emerge --regen` after each time that you run `emerge
* --sync`. Set PORTAGE_ECLASS_WARNING_ENABLE="0" in /etc/make.conf if you
* would like to disable this warning.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Do you think, I need to understand a lot of stuff?
I hope not confusing you with many trouble.

I'm trying to install new system on another HDD from working setup. So I mounted new HD under /mnt/chroot and exported ROOT. But this approach doesn't seem to work with paludis. I've tried to look for info about --destinations, but due to lack of informations I'm not sure if they are not ment for future binary support only.

I would appreciate any suggestion.

http://paludis.pioto.org/configuration/specpath.html
Configuration File Locations

Paludis looks in the following places for configuration files:

* ${PALUDIS_HOME}/.paludis, if the PALUDIS_HOME environment variable is set, or ${HOME}/.paludis otherwise.
* ${SYSCONFDIR}/paludis, where SYSCONFDIR is /etc on most systems.

If --environment :suffix or --environment paludis:suffix is specified, Paludis will use .paludis-suffix or paludis-suffix. This can be used to maintain multiple configurations, for example for chroots.
so you need to make ~/.paludis-whatever and define specpath inside to your chroot dir.
specpath.conf

If a file named specpath.conf exists in the configuration directory, Paludis uses this to find a second, real configuration directory. specpath.conf is a standard key=value configuration file, with the following keys having recognised meaning:

root
The real configuration directory is taken to be ${root}/SYSCONFDIR/paludis/ (note that HOME values are not used). When installing, ${root}/ is used rather than / as the base install location.
the rest of the paludis configuration should be put inside ${root}/etc/paludis , where root is defined in ~/.paludis-whatever/specpath.conf

then use "paludis --environment :whatever" and paludis should pick that up.

that worked for me a few months ago, i might have made a mistake somewhere along the way, so don't expect it to be correct out-of-the-box.

is there a way to have paludis understand the multilib use flag and have it build the multilib packages as such?

Paludis handles multilib the same as portage. As long as you're running a multilib system, it will build multilib packages as multilib

hmm.... it's not like this on my system. i'll take 4 examples:

i have glibc, gcc with multilib system and the profile set to multilib. portage compiles with mulilib (use flag) and installs both 32bit and 64bit files (for the various packages).
paludis instead doesn't find multilib (as well as nptl for a bunch of packages) as use flag and when building doesn't build also the 32bit counterparts. i've always thought that even if the mulilib flag is not recognized well (paludis shows it like this: (-multilib)) it would still install multilib packages as multilib ones. but i happend to see that a mulilib package (mplayerplug-in) hadn't built also the 32bit part. so i went on checking the other multilib packages and guess what: gcc and glibc have been updated by paludis without the 32bit part accordingly to the qlist utility. i didn't know that this would happen, and frankly i don't understand why before rebuilding gcc with multilib use flag with portage the 32bit apps have worked out well.

now, if i have some issues on my system and you're telling that on a multilib system paludis would automatically build multilib packages as so i'd like what are the things i need to look out and see what is wrong on my system.
thanks.

It sounds like things are definitely weird on your system. What profile are you using? what use flags have you declared that might affect it? Are you using paludis environment or portage?

I'd check to see if you have accidentally put something strange in use.conf or bashrc

I've been using a multilib system with paludis and everything is fine.

here's the paludis --info

http://pastebin.com/m1e4c35e0

here's the portage info (the differences are in the use flags that in portage aren't up to date):

http://pastebin.com/m40757efe

here's the paludis bashrc:

http://pastebin.com/mc8f28cb

this is the actual profile:

/usr/portage/profiles/default/linux/amd64/2008.0

this is the contents of /etc/profile

http://pastebin.com/m5b1adac

i don't seem to find anything wrong on my configuration.... :(

You have the multilib flag set in your USE flags. Try removing it and see if your problem clears up.

shouldn't it be set to build a multilib package?

Npe, the multilib flag is handled differently than others. It's a profile flag and is handled by the system.

Can anyone provide me with some pointers to find out what package had dependencies on the sloted kde3.5 base apps? kdelibs is being installed due to the packages below it on the above list, by why are those packages being pulled in??? Does paludis have an equery alternative to verify that I have uninstalled all packages that depend on kde3.5???

Thanks for your help!
try paludis -u =kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.9-r4 --permit-unsafe-uninstalls -p
this will give you a list of packages to uninstall (kdelibs 3.5.9-r4 in this example) and a list of red coloured packages that are the ones that need this package installed. these are the blockers, which mean that these packages need to be unistalled to be able to remove kdelibs.

There are a lot of packages (like open office) that need KDE 3.5. If you remove all of KDE you need to remove the kde flag from your USE flags.

I would just leave those few there and wait a while until their no longer needed.
My emerge --info
Have you run revdep-rebuild lately? It's in gentoolkit and it's worth a shot if things don't work well.

I have removed kde from the USE flags a while back.
paludis -u =kde-base/kdelibs-3.5.9-r4 --permit-unsafe-uninstalls -p
<- have already uninstalled kdelibs... when I try executing that command now, it recommends uninstalled kdelibs for kde4.

Have already reinstalled openoffice without kde support.

Yes, that is an option, but that's no fun :)

Is there no way to check for packages with broken dependencies?
Or check packages that have had a USE flag changed and hence need to be reinstalled?
Is it just me or is it strange that kde3.5 is being requested to be installed and paludis is not informing me why it should be installed (what dependency has been broken)? Could this problem be due to an old meta package (ie kdebase-startkde)?

Thanks for your help guys. Do appreciate all the work that has been done on paludis!!

Code: Select all

paludis --dl-reinstall if-use-changed everything
reconcilio -p
