How to OpenRC

This forum covers all Gentoo-related software not officially supported by Gentoo. Ebuilds/software posted here might harm the health and stability of your system(s), and are not supported by Gentoo developers. Bugs/errors caused by ebuilds from overlays.gentoo.org are covered by this forum, too.

How to OpenRC

  • Quote

Post by choogi » Tue Mar 18, 2008 4:07 am

I've been reading a bit about baselayout-2 and OpenRC (which seems to be popular). Which one do you all use? I want to try OpenRC but it's not in portage...do I just download the source and run a "make install"?

There is an overlay with an ebuild available: simply install layman, and then layman -a openrc.

I added openrc to the layman overlay and tried emerging openrc, but this is the output it get:

Code: Select all

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild     U ] sys-apps/baselayout-2.0.0 [1.12.11.1] USE="-bootstrap -build (-static%) (-unicode%*)" 29 kB [0=>1]
[ebuild  N    ] sys-apps/openrc-9999  USE="ncurses pam unicode -static" 0 kB [1]
[blocks B     ] <sys-fs/udev-118-r2 (is blocking sys-apps/openrc-9999)

Total: 2 packages (1 upgrade, 1 new, 1 block), Size of downloads: 29 kB
Portage tree and overlays:
 [0] /usr/portage
 [1] /usr/portage/local/layman/openrc

!!! Error: The above package list contains packages which cannot be installed
!!! at the same time on the same system.

For more information about Blocked Packages, please refer to the following
section of the Gentoo Linux x86 Handbook (architecture is irrelevant):

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml?full=1#blocked
Is this normal? How should I get by the udev blocking openrc? I'm kind of afraid of unmerging it and hoping it fixes itself later...

you can unmerge it temporarily, but be sure to re-emerge it before rebooting / shutting down :lol:

make a backup (just in case):

Code: Select all

quickpkg --include-config=y udev
after openrc re-emerge udev

Code: Select all

emerge -1 udev

No!!
Simply unmask udev, then openrc should pull in a newer version. Newer versions of udev are ~arch masked.

Look closer! :)

But wait! As you already upgraded baselayout, don't do it!
You're upgrading from baselayout-1, so maybe it is safer/better to first upgrade to baselayout 2.0.0-rc, which is in portage. Then upgrade to baselayout 2.0+openrc

So...I first upgraded to baselayout 2.0.0-rc and restarted, but now i get this weird error message that says:

Code: Select all

Partition /dev/sda5 is mounted with write permissions, cannot check it
where /dev/sda5 is my root partition. fsck doesn't work either because the it's mounted with write permissions so i went ahead and tried running fsck from the live cd but it didn't find anything.

After some googling around, I've concluded that it's probably not a baselayout problem but I downgraded back to baselayout-1 anyways.

I've tried adding ro to my grub line and I've tried typing "sudo mount -o remount,ro /dev/sda5" but then I just get "mount: / is busy"

Perhaps I should just start a new thread for this problem...

ideas?

Did you update _all_ config files (etc-update) after upgrading?

isn't it easier to use Uberlord OpenRC overlay?

git://git.overlays.gentoo.org/dev/uberlord.git

you've got all ebuilds provided by the creator of OpenRC. You can find all important info
at his homepage: http://roy.marples.name (including bugzilla).
If you have a problem just report a bug and he will almost instantly help you out!

Erm, you must be joking 8O

You HAVE TO upgrade the config files and init scripts. There is etc-update, dispatch-conf, etc-proposals - get used to one of those, or better don't touch baselayout and the system init. Not doing so WILL break things.

That's exactly what a layman -a openrc gives you.

don't laugh ! :?

there was a time in the beginning when I was in the same boat & didn't have the experience how to do it :wink:
the reason: I refused to run it because I had fear that I would "bomb my system" by changing anything - but the bottomline is: not updating will "break" your system even more == in the worst case you can't log in anymore or it won't boot anymore :lol:

the solution:
booting via livecd; chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash ; env-update && source /etc/profile ; then really execute etc-update & process the overdue updates :wink:

in the beginning after such upgrades often the system wouldn't work for me :lol: , so just ask, if you're not sure

@choogi:

believe me it's idiot-proof :)

just execute

Code: Select all

etc-update
then you'll get presented the changes between old & new file (it's the same file but parts changed):

++ == new parts

-- == old parts

(at the beginning of the line)

you interact with it via:
1, 2, 3, 4 (numbers) in conjunction with enter

think a little about the changes in the file & if you're sure they won't affect your system, accept the new changes

attention !
often updates remove characteristics/settings you entered for your system (after you accepted them)

config-changes are often necessary, e.g. if the changes are pretty big: version 5.2 -> 5.4 of a program and it wouldn't function with old config

the choice is: (simplified)
1) accept (the new file) - you either need your to re-input your settings in certain parts (before that note them down / copy & paste in a backup-file) or simply forget it (if the settings weren't that important)
2) discharge (the new file) -> the new file / state if it would "restore" the file to the "original" state of the author

if you're not sure just type ctrl + c

that'll interrupt the process before you make any changes / damages,

if you're not sure ask in this forum ...

ok, enough story-telling for today :idea:

:arrow: now - get it, tiger :)

That's a lot of updates I haven't made 8O

I think I'm just going to do a reinstall over the weekend since I still haven't seemed to find a solution to my "root is mounted with write permissions" problem and do etc-update whenever I emerge anything new. Thanks everyone!

how i can get localtime ?

Code: Select all

pleadian ~ $ ls -l /etc/localtime
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Мар 20 10:52 /etc/localtime -> /usr/share/zoneinfo/Europe/Kiev
pleadian ~ $ grep clock= /etc/conf.d/clock
clock="local"
make no differnce to unset localtime and clock="utc", time don't change - it's 2 hours ahead.

i think the /etc/conf.d/clock is deprecated in newer versions of openrc/baselayout-2 in favour of *just* using the /etc/localtime symlink.

Worst case set /etc/conf.d/clock to local and link /etc/localtime to the right zone and then set the correct date/time using the date command and hopefully all will be ok :)
Please add [solved] to the initial post's subject line if you feel your problem is resolved.

Here it only worked during startup, if i *copied* and not symlinked it. Maybe that's because /usr is on a seperate partition, not sure.

Yes, that's why. "/etc/localtime" is used before all of the mounts in "/etc/fstab" are done, so, if your "/usr" is on a different partition, the symlink method will fail. I like using symlinks when the partitioning is simple, though, because then the time information is automatically updated when updates to sys-libs/timezone-data are released.

Would it not be possible to add an after to the localtime script to made sure /usr is mounted first?

No.

Basically, if /usr is not on /, then /etc/localtime should NOT be a symlink, otherwise crazy things such as bogus mtimes and silly mount times in disk superblocks can happen.

It replaces most of it.
baselayout also supplies static files like /etc/passwd which openrc won't.
