A string of emerge failures

  • Quote

Post by fstephens » Wed Jun 14, 2006 10:19 pm

Seems like half of what I try to update fails to emerge. This has been going on for a few weeks and is getting really annoying. Fist it was Dia. I searched the forums and didn't find an answer that worked for me, so I just blocked upgrading it for now. It's been a while so I don't remember the actuall errors, but maybe some one can spot a common thread here.

Various KDE sub-packages fail, like KDevelop. I read the guide to moving to modular KDE, but perhaps I missed something. I have NOT moved to modular X yet, but that shouldn't matter right?
At least a couple of these failures had this line in the log:
!!! died running emake, kde_src_compile:make
(sorry, thats all I can remember)

Ok, here is the latest one:

Code: Select all

!!! compile failure
!!! If you need support, post the topmost build error, and the call stack if relevant.
(8 of 13) Compiling/Merging dev-cpp/glibmm-2.8.4
I apologize for not being more specifice on the others, but if I can solve this one, I'll retry the other fail emerges and report back.
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thanks

Oops! It is gcc (GCC) 3.4.6
I was trying to update the gcc version used, but these type problems predate that. Maybe I left things in a mixed up state?

Code: Select all

gcc-config --list-profiles
 [1] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.6
 [2] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.6-hardened
 [3] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.6-hardenednopie
 [4] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.6-hardenednopiessp
 [5] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.3.6-hardenednossp
 [6] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.6 *
 [7] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.6-hardened
 [8] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.6-hardenednopie
 [9] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.6-hardenednopiessp
 [10] i686-pc-linux-gnu-3.4.6-hardenednossp
Should I go back to 3.3.6?
Thanks.

I'm glad you posted this. I have also been experiencing a number of emerge issues. Some of the most recent that wont take are thunderbird, open office, etc... None of the errors are ever the same, and I just keep working through things, usually solving them by masking the newest version of the package. What happened to portage? I know I am not the only one this is happening to, but it is (extremely) frustrating.

Try re-emerging libsigc++. This cleared up the same problem for me.

I have to give credit to juniper as I got the idea from a post of his while researching this issue.

Hope it fixes your problem. :)

Note that I am sometimes using Kuroo 0.80.2 , which says "using KDE 3.4.3". So I still think something didn't go right with the upgrade to KDE 3.5.2. Kuroo doesen't seem to notice if I have done an emerge --sync. It still wants to do an update every time I start it.

Per the suggestion here I did re-emerge libsigc++. I was able to emerge a few packages including KDevelop, xine-lib, iptables & gst-plugins-alsa. Dia still fails, but I think that may be a seprate issue. I read something in the forums a while back relating to Dia not emerging. But the suggestions didn't work for me, so in case anyone has a quick answer here is the emege error:

Code: Select all

I seemed to be getting a lot of compile errors, so I upgraded to gcc 3.4 and now everything is good as gold.

I suspect that you need to run

Code: Select all

emerge --oneshot sys-libs/libstdc++-v3
I could be wrong. Someone who can read the compiler output will probably be able to diagnose you problem better.

I'd suggest to just try again. This might have been a temporary problem with your network connection.

Well.........
I did

Code: Select all

emerge --oneshot sys-libs/libstdc++-v3
and then some emerges in Kuroo (makes it easy to see the log files).
here is the result of one that failed (now I'm doing KDE stuff & Xorg-we'll see how that goes)

Code: Select all

Well, the last thing I tried was changing the default GCC back to 3.3.6 from 3.4.6. That seemed to work.
I can now compile even KDE apps. The question is - why, and how can I fix it so I can use the later GCC?
Could GCC 3,4,6 be corrupted somehow? After reverting to 3.3.6 I re-emerged 3.4.6 , but I haven't tried it yet. Are there any real advantages for a normal user from the later versions of GCC?
Any suggestions appreciated.

If you get the dia fail to load external source error just emerge docbook-xml-dtd.
