KDE freeze

  • Quote

Post by darklordhelmut » Thu Nov 13, 2003 8:58 am

Frequently when using KDE the desktop freezes. I can still move the mouse, but not affect anything. And the computer doesn't respond to keybord input, not even Ctrl+Alt+Backspace.

This problem usually occurs when konqueror is drawing a new location, but not always (has happened with nothing but a konsole running too).

KDE is recently emerged (3 days ago).
My system is an Athlon 750 MHz, 256 MB RAM, Geforce 2 MX400. Using ReiserFS. compiling with march="athlon" -03.

Any ideas on a solution, or should I just change to windowmaker?

Wow, just popped into this forum because I have the same problem. I think it may be related to what I tjink is called "mnplayer" or "lmpayer," anyway some muntimedia plugin for Konq. The only reason I say this, id 'cause last time I had a freeze up, I managed to get into a console, before the shit hit the fan & my system load jumped to like 15, (when running "w" takes forever), and that seemed to be the problem. But just killing that plug in did not seem to fix the problem, kdeinit spawned about 20 copies of itself, so I had to go on a kdeinit killing spree. Of course, that killed my X session, but at least I did not have to reboot.

So I am relly not sure what the problem is. KDE has been feeling really sluggish. I have six desktops with different walpaper in four, and different xplanets running in the other two. Used to not be a problem, but now even on a freshly started KDE session, changing desktops takes time....though this may not be related.

Anyway, I will continue to search for cause, and post here.

(BTW, I'm running AthlonXP 1800+ with 500 some MB RAM, so the processor and memory ain't the problem. However, don't give up on KDE just yet, a solution should be found.)

I have the same problem. First I tought my problem was power saving related, but now I'm sure about that. This may be false statement, but I have a feeling that if I don't rum konqueror that problem won't come.

Further testing

After some more testing, I have found out that the problem is not unique for konqueror. Graphical web browsers (konq, mozilla et c) are impossible to run without the computer crashing after a short time. Lynx works fine, and so does all non-browser programs. Is this hardware related or could it be a bug in some libs for example?

NVIDIA drivers

Post by darklordhelmut » Sat Nov 29, 2003 1:34 pm

OK, after installing from GRP the problem persisted. But when installing the ordinary way again (and it is a lengthy process compiling KDE), I forgot to change the XF86config file from "nv" to "nvidia". And now everything seems to work just fine.

What is the difference between "nv" and "nvidia", from a users point of view? I'm not into gaming, more than a bit of 'Baldur's Gate II' now and then. But I want to use mplayer and such applications. Is there some big drawback for me not using nvidias own drivers?

Check your nvidia XFree driver settings.
Ensure that in your XF86Config file, in device section you have:

Code: Select all

    Option "RenderAccel" "0"
Turn off also, other optimizations options of nvidia (sidebanding.. etc...)
If this doesn't work, check your agp settings.
Most off these locks are related with vnidia driver settings.
Keep Slamming...

Unless, of course, ypu don't have an nvida card, such as in my case. I am still trying to trouble shoot this problem, but so far without much luck....

POOF! Sorry just dropped in from the Mandrake side of Linux, Say I had the very same problem with KDE under Mandrake, lock-ups, mozilla lock-ups and crashes, I could not run my machine 24/7 without it locking up, screensavers would not work right. Loaded version 9.1 and had the same results, reloaded 8.0 every thing worked as it should. Loaded 9.0 and had the problems again, I went crazy with the mess.

A couple of days ago, I fired the machine up and used Gnome, while messing with the sceensavers, which were not working right, I got a error message :( It said that the GIU monitor deamond was not responding, wow. I went back and checked the install package list and it had not been installed. After I cursed the French ( again ), I installed it and every thing is working like it should, the machine has been up for three days with out a burp

Maybe the same KDE problem? OK I am leaving the world of Gentoo, POOF

OK, now my XF86config reads like this:

Code: Select all

...
Option "NvAGP" "0"
Option "RenderAccel" "0"
...
and things work just fine. Thanks for all the help!

I suppose I will look into the AGP stuff a bit more when I have some spare time.
