O. K. I am not proud of how long I laughed when I first saw this, but maturity was never I claim that I have made (at least not in any public forum)

Yeah, I don't see birds or planes... just that big middle finger pointed right at the Earth. |

Well, the "bird" is of course metaphoric. However, since this is an international forum, I fear the significance of this gesture may be lost on many readers. I hope the link provided should prove informative in that regard.
As for the cosmological/theological aspect of this, I must confess I had not considered it. At first I thought this was just someone with the Gimp (or Photoshop) lots of time and a sence of humor.
However, the image is hosted at NASA, and though many things have been discovered there, a sence of humor has not so far been discovered there---among other things.
Therefore, I will leave it to the theasts here to debate. Is this is proof of Jeffersonian Deism; and this formation was god's last message to the people of Earth before he sodded off? Or perhaps the Fundamentalists * are correct when they might maintain that this shows that Man has looked too far, and need not look further.
Me, I just think it's funny.
[ * Warning: The link provided will take you to a skary web site full of hatefull biggots and all sorts of other silliness which may be deemed offensive and fall outside of Forum guidelines.] |

I think that's a photo taken by a scuba diver off Alaska, shortly after Bush's environmental policies went into effect. _________________ join #gentoo-help on irc.freenode.net

Good try, but not quite. The waters off Alaska are mostly a brown murk, except in the Southeast where they are a green murk. I've never scuba-dived here, 'cause rocks and murk are not enough to get me to put on the super duper dry suits which would keep you alive in Arctic waters.
So after "Bush's environmental policies," I would expect to see brown murk with black slugde, around Anchorage, or green murk with black sludge, as we have already seen in Valdez. _________________ |

It's a funny thing being an astronomy undergraduate student. I looked at that picture and said to myself "what a lovely nebula" then I said to myself "what was it doing on that thread?" and then "Ooooohhhh, it looks like a middle finger."
Same thing with "your-anus" jokes. I don't get them when I read them because the 'real' pronuciation of the word Uranus is more like "Urine-us" (of course I am sure jokes can be made about the real pronunciation, I just haven't heard any.)
I almost find it sad that my world has been twisted around so that these things aren't funny, but when I first read this I could not stop laughing:
Q. How many astronomers does it take to change a lightbulb?
A. One, if he can shoot straight. |

This is so long overdue it's not even funny, but I didn't get it

Yes, thank you. I'm generally against thread necromancy, but I laughed for a good solid minute when I saw that image. Personally, I think this proves that the Cosmos has a sense of humor. (a very warped one) ((I like it )) |

Astronomers hate light pollution.
(the implication is that one would change a working outdoor light by shooting out the bulb...) |
