i voted for BitchX

BitchX and irssi are two of the very best IRC clients i've seen ...irssi being a more slender version of the BitchX beast.
a great plus that irssi has is the tab-autocompletion of filenames.

right now i'm mostly using kopete as a IRC client, but that's mainly based on the fact that i have all my other communication tools there ;)
when there's a need for some heavy-duty IRCing, irssi and BitchX still rock

Xchat? ...never liked that one :P ...it's probably pretty good, but i just don't like it :/

Another vote for irssi. It's scriptable in perl and supports regex in many places (such as /ignore)... enough said!

In all honesty ... Xchat is king. I only use irssi from ssh or vc. When I'm in X ... which is most of the time... xchat is one of the few programs that I always have running. The script variations are incredible and it runs beutifully from a nice h2o-gtk2-saphire gui

I don't care, I can still vote for Emacs, I'm sure there's an IRC-package out for it somewhere :D

I remember liking BichX back before I found out about irssi as well. ;)
Well, heck, I probably would still be using BitchX (well, EPIC4 + my own homebrew script that I lost) if I didn't have a need to be able to customize my DCC settings (what ip to listen on, what ports to listen on, etc).

I spent awhile on irssi yesterday and.. it really wasn't bad! :) It would be great if it had a user list on the side such as XChat's. :?

I used BitchX for a little bit but switched to irssi, both are very nice but irssi wins my vote. I was not much a fan of Xchat, probably because I have not used it too often but eh its nice :P

irssi. Fulfills my needs - I rarely use DCC or CTCP or anything else.. I just talk alot on #gentoo :P

Xchat is nice as GUI client, but screen... wow.

C-a S then C-a C or put another screen in the pane with C-a p/n

You can split screen!

I don't use SSH to my server for irssi.. uptimes are for wieners. Anyway, it's all of 500MHz in a server which I mainly play with BeOS on.

My top3 would be:

1) kvirc (cvs version, v3 comes out soon.. destroys v2)
2) irssi (recently tried it out and got over my initial problems with it.
3) bitchx (used it for a long time, but it's showing it's age. v2 should be nice).

Worst 3:
1) Xchat (ugh, there's so much I want to say, but instead I'll say it's one good feature is being scriptable in a few languages like perl)
2) Konversation (the gui makes absolutely no sense)
3) ksirc (Just.. horrid)
4) Any IM program with an IRC plugin (if it's not scriptable, it's basically useless to me, plus I find that they are almost all SLOW)

After starting off with mIRC (in <gulp> Winders), I was weaned onto Xchat with my first Linux install. It works in both my partitions (yes, I have to keep a Windows partition on this machine for certain apps), easy to set up, and.. stuff. I'd like to check out some other (free) apps, but been too busy.

heh ...recently i've been using Kopete also for my IRC needs ...it's fairly basic still (still no DCC!!!!), but when it comes to just talking it's ok ...i still think BitchX (and irssi) is the best, though!! :D ...i just like having all my messenger services in one place :P
