As of right now, I don't think it's out for linux yet. But it has been confirmed that it will ship in the box and be mentioned on the cover. I bet they will be releasing the demo in due time, however.

I can only find the Windows version on the official site, though www.insidemacgames.com provides with a link for the Mac-version of ut2k4. No such thing for a Linux version then? :(

Straight from the mouth of Mr. God^Hrdon himself:
UT2004 Linux Demo client is not ready yet. There's a showstopper in it, but I've been awake for days, and can't gather the concentration to fix it.

This will be available soon, but probably not tonight. Sorry to disappoint.

The good news is that getting these embarrassing moments out of the way during the demo means the final retail version will be ready to go on time.

You could better use Ut2k4's opengl renderer with wine, that will probably work better than d3d with winex

Why not just wait until tommorow, when the native linux-demo arrives? Sure, I can't wait either (or, actually I can, because my system is way below par.. :? ) but why go through the hassels with Wine(X)?

Sorry I'm not helpful, but this game will have a native client (demo & full version)
--- checking for native Win32 platform... no

it had better be out tomorow, personally i think they should have waited to not piss off, or slightly annoy linux and mac users.

i downloaded the windows demo in college, took me an hour, finished at the end of the lesson, then it complained directx9 was not installed and i kicked the desk.

EDIT: my postcounts 1111 :|

Is this kind of crap really necessary? They go to the trouble of porting their client to Linux (I would be surprised if they saw a profit from this), and you complain about having to wait one more day than Windows users to play the demo?

They have always promised to release this game with Linux support right in the box. Linux gamers should be enormously thankful to companies like iD and Epic. This garbage is inexcusable.

It had better be out tomorrow...or what? You'll post another nasty diatribe on a forum represnting a good chunk of the Linux community? Good idea...why not tell them you'll personally boycott them and give them ANOTHER reason not to waste their time with our OS in the future.
-It's gonna take a lot of fireworks to clean this place up.

jesus christ calm down, it's not crap, i am a little annoyed at having to wait another day, and i'm not allowed to express that i'm feeling jealous my freinds are playing it right now and i cant.

of cource they will profit from the linux version, they are going to go out an buy the CD, it's in the box remember. more people will buy it becuase of that.

and why is being annoyed at a later release date destroy the reputation of the linux community, you dont assume all iraq's are complete nutters that like genoside based on 1 iraqi (saddam)

but i know that the majority of people are like that, stupid racists

PS: i'm kindof pissed off today so sorry if i'm hostile, a squad of seagulls lined up and pelted me with shit)

did you have to do anything special to get it to run under Wine? I got it installed through wine, but got an error when I tried to start it. I am not at home right now, so I don't know the exact error. Thanks.

It works 100% for me using wine-20040121 and an nvidia card. I just needed to minimize the kde panel before running it otherwise it was shown on top of the game and do this:
Go into ~/.wine/fake_windows/UT2004Demo/System
edit UT2004.ini and on line 21 change it to this:
RenderDevice=OpenGLDrv.OpenGLRenderDevice

I played with it for a little while on a geforce fx5200/xp2500 and on lower settings it was actually totally playable, probably 50fps or so. So for anyone with a real video card it should run great :)

It ran perfectly, not a single glitch encountered in the graphics, sound or input.

because wine barely works and setting up winex is too much for whats suposed to be 1 days wait, my dads windows PC isn't currently up to the job of doing anything.

just wondered how you are finding it :-) do you think the vehicles are a good or bad addition to the game? and hows the gameplay, like UT2003 (a bit sluggish) or have they improved that, etc :)

The latest from Ryan:

Code: Select all

Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo:
The Linux server is available, we're still tracking down a last-minute bug
in the Linux client...this is coming out as soon as we track it down. I had
to sleep last night too, which didn't help. Have patience.
