gaim-0.75-r7 - Can't log into Yahoo

  • Quote

Post by sbbeebe » Wed Jan 28, 2004 12:49 am

Well, i guess the subject pretty much says it. I emerged gaim-0.75-r7 based on the GLSA posting. It did install encryption, which I wasn't using before, but at any rate, now when I try to connect to yahoo, the signon dialog just sits there saying ...connecting...

I tried deleting and re-adding my yahoo account. The server is scs.msg.yahoo.com, which should be ok.

Any ideas?

Same problem here without encryption plugin loaded. Seems that this problem began yesterday.

[Edit: New gaim ebuild - seems to take care of issues]

Post by sbbeebe » Wed Jan 28, 2004 10:03 pm

OK, so I went back to gaim-0.75-r5. I can now log into yahoo ok. But gaim is taking way too many system resources. Anyone know if there is a stable version of gaim that supports yahoo?

Looks like the gaim team has a yahoo patch. But I'm not sure how to apply it in a gentoo setting...

[edit]
just did emerge gaim to get gaim-0.75-r8, and it seems to address the issues. Normal resource usage AND logs in to yahoo.

I've gotten sick of wasting my time trying to figure out why gaim and yahoo don't work. Its as if there's some type of game afoot. Gaim gets fixed and then something happens and it doesn't work again mysteriously. This is how its been for the last yr. almost for me.

I was running net-im/gaim-0.75-r8 * and it was working just fine this SAT. Now it 's borked again. I'm done wrestling with it.

As an alternative I've found that ymessenger is actually considered a stable pkg now, so I just did "emerge ymessenger" and it works like a charm.

I'll still use gaim's IRC client of which, works just fine. Just my 2 pennies for anyone else that is sick of ,
Yahoo_Gaim = "it works !!! wha-hoo " + "Psyche !!! Heh.. I'm borked again.. Heh :twisted: "

Thats good to here that yours is still working. Usually its a mystery to me why it all the sudden just stops working especially when inbetween the time that its been working and then suddenly stops, nothing's been emerged, unmerged or rebooted. It just suddenly stops working. Trying to get it working again is just a waste of my time personally. I just use it to chat with my mom and a few friends. So its really not such a huge deal that its borked for me. Again downloading the actual "ymessenger" pkg works just fine. This is the linux/unix package that was written specifically for yahoo messenger anyways, so it doesn't surprise me that it does work.

That seems to be the whole problem with yahoo messenger and """3rd party""" apps trying to use "yahoo's messenging protocol". Just speculating, but is as if they've hired someone to find and break 3rd party apps from using the Yahoo messenging protocol. (Maybe just a tad bit parnoid :D )

I upgraded linux-headers to 2.4.21 and then gcc to 3.3.2 and then recompiled glibc. After that I recompiled gaim so I was not sure if that is what broke it. When I try to logon to Yahoo it says >>
unable to read.

is that what anyone else is seeing?

have not tried kopete... just emerged ymessenger and it works fine.. looks ugly though.

No, not that I know of... I've been having that problem with gaim with versions of linux-headers, gcc and glibc prior to those ones as well as with those same versions. Someone mentioned on #gaim irc channel that this problem will be fixed in gaim-0.76. So I'm patiently waiting for the gaim team to release that version. Hope this time it works FOREVER and not like the previous versions where it worked for a couple of days and then stoped working for no reason... :(

Yup. Same thing here. But I'm running gcc 3.2.3. When it first appeared to fail it would be stuck at "Connecting" and just sit thier. When I looked at this with Ethereal it didn't recoginize the YMSG protocol. Error 550 unknown protocol..
Then when I did "emerge sync" and updated a few things and now I can't connect what so ever. The connection appears to be rejected or the Gaim client can't understand what the Yahoo server is trying to pass it. Thus, getting the same errors that your getting.
Here's my emerge history with dates.

Actually this is a portage log so the umerging of the old packages is caught as well.

Everything was working on Sunday FEB 1st. On Monday or Tuesday Gaim would just sit trying to Connect. I just used my wifes yahoo IM account on Windows in the mean time.

After reading through allot of post's on FEB 4th I decided to try some trouble shooting. Of which nothing seemed to help. With the following history now my Gaim error is "Unable to Read".. So now it appears .. Heh.. Heh.. Double-Borked.. 8O To funny. I'm not sure if the linux headers had something to do with the compounded error or not.

yeah mine also would sit and do nothing and then yesterday it started to say "unable to read"

my upgrades are about the same as yours

looking through my log mine stopped working
with:

psmisc
perl
linux-headers
and at that same time I also upgraded gcc and recompiled glibc

but it happened to you to so I think there is something broke

I tried downgrading perl still gets same error... psmisc?? linux-headers-2.4.21??? (I would say it is linux-headers)

but i dont want to downgrade because after I upgraded and recompiled glibc gFTP is actually threaded now

I don't understand why if the Linux community takes the time to build the ymessenger client that it doesn't focus on making this client DA-Yahoo bombshell seeing that everything else consistently breaks after some time. Gaim yahoo is definetly allot nicer than this stock pot IM. And it seems that everyone I know uses Yahoo IM. Being a noob I don't really know what to think though. Heh..

I'm just starting to dive into learning Python so hopefully I can be of some use in the near future. I've done nothing but take, take, take.....so far. 8)

Since we're on the subject of yahoo on linux let me raise a question.
I have noticed that an unvisible yahoo member (which will show up as offline for all others) would receieve a message from windows yahoo messenger if sent one instantly,
but never recieves a message from a linux yahoo client (be it ymessenger or gaim).

anyone with similar experience ???

I was getting tired of gaim not connecting to yahoo, so i got the 0.76cvs version. It works now.

Basicaly i did:

Code: Select all

$ cvs -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/gaim login
$ cvs -z3 -d:pserver:anonymous@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/gaim co gaim
$ cd gaim
$ ./autogen.sh
$ ./configure --prefix=/usr
$ make
$ su
***
# make install
Gaim connected to yahoo after this but i got a warning that gaim-encryption had been compiled for 0.75 so i disabled it for now.

I am going to try to emerge 0.75-r8 over it and then just do a make install in the cvs version of the yahoo plugin directory.

8O :x :cry:

guess i shouldn't be shocked, i new it was coming.

gaim-0.75-r8 stopped working for me today on yahoo. had a problem that required me to restart...

so i probably did an update earlier in the week that caused the problem.
