KDE shutdown/restart/logout problem

  • Quote

Post by speeddemon » Thu Nov 20, 2003 12:30 am

Ive had gentoo for awhile now, but just recently it started to hang on shutdowns/restarts/logouts. The only thing that I can think I did was try to use the xfree-drm drivers (radeon 7500 mobility, Im on a laptop), although they still won't work with opengl (well it does, just not enough to really do much, 120 fps with glxgears). All that happens when i try to shutdown is the screen goes blank, and the fan comes one which indicates that the cpu usage is up at 100%.

have u tried pressing alt-ctl-backspace as hard logout of X? because then you will know whether it is a hard lock or just X crashing

for a while X would crash on me at logout, and the only way to finish the shutdown was to kill it using that shortcut. at least this will lower down your options.

(check out ur/var/log/XFree86.log for any clues too)

I'm getting what sounds like the same problem. KDE crashes on logout; problem started when I installed xfree-drm. Unlike speeddemon I've a desktop system (still Radeon 7500) and I did convince DRI to work. It's definitely a hard lockup; ctrl-alt-bs doesn't do anything. I didn't notice anything unusual in the XFree86 log either, although I'm going to perform a few more tests to see if I can isolate it more before I give up on the problem.

Just going back a few more pages, I noticed another thread on exactly this topic. It looks like some people were able to solve it. The solution involves installing a new version of xfree86 with some new patches. Haven't tested it yet myself, but sounds like it should work.

Similar problem here - using Radeon Mobility (L6?). It only hangs if I'm using kdm though. If kdm isn't running and I login to a VT and startx, it closes down cleanly.

Same Here (Solution)

I was having the same problems. I found that it was because I had emerged xfree-4.3.0-r3. Once I went back to xfree-4.3.0-r2 I didn't have any more problems.

You might want to try that.

I have the same problem. My machine completely locks up though and I can't ssh into it to shut it down remotely.

Here's what /var/log/kdm.log shows after a reboot from crash:

It looks like that every time.

I'm running xfree-drm-4.3.0-r6, xfree-4.3.0-r3. I have a radeon mobility 7500 graphics card in an IBM thinkpad A31.

I'll try downgrading xfree to see if that also works for me.

Madeline

P.S. rfingas, where is that other thread? I'm having trouble finding it.

I went back to xfree-4.3.0-r2 but kept everything else the same and it now works fine.

If you are having mtrr overlap problems, here's how I fixed it:

mtrr problems

  • Quote

Post by mpool » Fri Jan 30, 2004 1:33 pm

kensiprell:
I'm running 2.4 kernel so that's different from your setup and also, I don't have the problem when I use startkde manually. It is only when kdm is automatically loaded at boot that I have the logout problem.

I can't check my /var/log/XFree86.0.log because I went back to XFree4.3.0-r2 and everything is fine now. So, if anyone hasn't downgraded and is still having the problem, could you please check your Xfree log for MTRR errors?

Thanks
Madeline

Yep, the bug is in XFree86, but fixed for the upcoming 4.4

looking at the bug report, only one line of one file is changed. So, if you are like me and don't want to emerge a different version of xfree because of a slow modem, here's the solution that worked for me. It's a little convoluted, but not too bad.

First, untar /usr/portage/distfiles/X430src-3.tgz. it will produce a directory called "xc". The file to change is xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/ati/radeon_dri.c

edit the file as shown in:

http://bugs.xfree.org/attachment.cgi?id=31&action=view

Save and retar. If you are a pro, you will be able to create a tar with the X430src-3.tgz name, but I'm not, so my tar file was xc.tar.gz. Rename whatever the tarfile's name is to X430src-3.tgz and copy it over the original, saving the original under another name in case something got screwed up.

Emerge xfree. If the version of xfree is still 4.3.0-r4, it will give you a digest mismatch error. To fix that, copy the new checksum shown in the error message into the /usr/portage/x11-base/xfree/files/digest-xfree-4.3.0-r4 where the old one was. Save, close, and re-emerge. It should work now. Once it finishes, xfree should be fixed.

I've just emerge sync'd and upgraded to...

xfree 4.3.0-r4

... and I didn't need the patch, the source looks like it is already included.

Anyway - problem is now solved on my radeon Mobility M6 LY

Slightly old thread, but I'm having a similar issue.
I have a Radeon 9600 XT (with acceleration, BOOYA). shutdown/reboot/logout are all broken. I recently finished an update of world (emerge -Duv world), but that didn't fix it. I emerge sync-ed again today and found that _another_ xfree is out. geez. I'm emerging that right now, maybe it has a bug fix for this.
Also, there was a new kernel (2.6.7-r8, I'm at -r6), so I'll try that out, but I think it's just a security update.

I'm having the same problem which seem to start somewhere around 2.6.7-r6. But all of you are mentioning xfree, I'm using xorg 6.7.0.-r1. I haven't tried any fixes yet, I'm just trying to get a feel for the situation before I dive in.

Update to last post:

When I try to shutdown or reboot from KDM I get the black screen lockup. If I reboot from a "Root Console" it works just fine. More testing to come!

I have a problem when i logout from KDE, (not shutdown, or reboot), kdm doesn't come up, but kdm/X crashes and i'm in console. Is this problem related, or not?

I'm having a problem. Latest 2.4 kernel (2.4.28-gentoo-r5) with newest xorg build. Using latest nvidia drivers on my nforce2 chipset machine w/ a MMX 440 geforce4 integrated chip. Never had this problem before, only showed up since the fresh gentoo build i did on this sytem for kicks two weeks ago. All new builds! Using conservative (-O2 -march=athlon-xp) settings. Everything else looks fine. Locks up on logoff with tv out support on or off, and seems to always still show mouse cursor. Xorg logs do not show error on syslog for some reason. Looks like system freezes before it writes errors. Otherwise, no X errors at all. Everything normal. VT switching does nothing, neither does sys rq magic, and having a remote ssh session running and trying to reboot that way also bad. Interestingly, can still ping the machine after lockup! No ports show open through nmap. ACPI was disabled in bios and compiled out of kernel. I am *not* using KDM or XDM or similar! Any luck someone?
