Does emerge often break stuff???

Problems with emerge or ebuilds? Have a basic programming question about C, PHP, Perl, BASH or something else?

Does emerge often break stuff???

  • Quote

Post by Budoka » Wed Nov 20, 2013 1:35 am

I have become increasingly frustrated the past couple of weeks. I do a world update almost daily to keep my system up to date but recently it seems like it breaks stuff on my system. The most recent preventing me from booting.

My box is "stable" in that after my initial install of Gentoo, I only installed applications that I need to work with and almost nothing after that. So it isn't even remotely the case that I am emerging all sorts of apps that may bork my system. This leads me to conclude that it must be the world update that breaks stuff.

Am I missing something? Is this suppose to happen? As best I can tell I am only using stable repositories.

Please post the output of emerge --info ; find /etc/portage/package.* -type f -print0 | while read -d '' f; do echo "$f"; cat -n "$f"; done so that we can determine your Portage configuration.

Your base configuration requests only stable, but you have an out-of-tree overlay I do not normally see here, and you have a huge number of overrides and customizations. The rampant use of static libraries may not be harmful, but is quite unusual.

Thanks. Yes that overlay is to allow me to tether. It has the ipheth-pair package but it has broken as well so will probably get rid of it. I don't know what "out of tree" means though. I found that overlay when doing a Layman -L so assumed anything there would be in tree?

As to the "rampant use of static libraries", I am at a loss there as well. I only do world update, dispatch-conf, and revdep-rebuild. Sometimes I am prompted by emerge to add autounmask but to the best of my knowledge this isn't something I am explicitly doing myself. Am I doing something incorrectly?

Sorry, out-of-tree overlay is redundant. To me, any overlay is by definition not part of the Gentoo Portage tree. Overlays found via layman can probably be assumed not to be malicious, but I would not assume that they are of high quality. If you only installed packages from it that are not part of the regular tree, then that is probably not related to your current problem. I have seen people install packages from overlays when either the overlay was out of date or just buggy, which can cause a variety of problems.

Adding unmask entries is an explicit action to deviate from the results you would get if you stayed within the confines of your original settings. Sometimes that is the right thing to do. Sometimes it is not.

After filtering out all the generated comments, there are fewer static entries than I thought. However, I strongly prefer to see static libraries avoided entirely on desktop systems.

I'll answer my own question. "Yes it does"

I don't think I will be doing any world updates in the immediate future.

Does emerge often break stuff???
For me it does not. However I went through a period where stuff was breaking lots after an emerge. I took the attitude that it was not "emerge" that was doing the "breaking" but that the problem was that I had too highly customized my gentoo installation. After all, Gentoo merely provides a set of tools to help the user customize a gentoo-linux installation to their own tastes and wishes,
but that ultimately the choices made are mine, as are the consequences of them. While the Gentoo tools, such as emerge, are excellent, they are not (and could not be) infallible under all circumstances and with respect to all choices that a user could make. And my installation was complicated as I used to play around with the use flags and various other customizations, just for the fun of it.

So I made a decision to revert everything to the stable Gentoo tree for my arch, with the default use flags for my profile, unless I had a definite need as a user to make changes from the default.

The result: things are rarely broken after emerge (in fact I can not even remember the last time that this happened.) and yet I still have all of the user features that I actually want.

PS I still like to "play around" with the settings, but I do it on a separate installation. rather than the one that I actually use.

It breaks stuff regularly. So to speak.
Everytime a library is upgraded that other software uses, that software is "broken". You need to emerge it (revdep-rebuild or this new emerge @preserved-rebuild).
If stuff is still broken after that then I have to say no, don't experience this.

Not for me, but learning maintenance is key

I love Gentoo.

It's been years since I've had a problem with a basic Gentoo setup breaking due to emerge -auvDN @system @world

Certainly overlays and out-of-tree software installed from source will need a lot of manual maintenance.

Didn't work... For the basic, I didn't know anything at all on linux... I could not make out when it asked me to mask, unmask, conflicts, couldn't mount a kernel, then couldn't boot on it. So yep a newbie but I am proud of what I learned none the less

* IMPORTANT: config file '/etc/portage/package.keywords' needs updating.
* See the CONFIGURATION FILES section of the emerge
* man page to learn how to update config files.

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

IMPORTANT: config file '/etc/portage/package.keywords' needs updating.
Familiarise yourself with either etc-update or dispatch-conf if you haven't already, I'd advise looking into the changes they want to make rather than blindly updating or zapping configs.

You can get around these, for example

Code: Select all

 (kde-apps/konsole-4.14.3-r2:4/4.14::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
    >=kde-apps/konsole-4.14.3:4[aqua=] (>=kde-apps/konsole-4.14.3:4[-aqua]) required by (kde-apps/kdebase-meta-4.14.3-r2:4/4::gentoo, installed)
like this:

emerge -C kde-apps/kdebase-meta
emerge -1 --autounmask-write =kde-apps/konsole-4.14.3-r2 kde-apps/kdebase-meta
revdep-rebuild
emerge -uavDN world
Move onto the next blockage, rinse repeat (emphasis on concentrating on one blockage at a time or it could get worse).

Not an elegant solution but it has worked for me recently.

Gentoo is not a newbie distro. Therefore you need a basic knowledge and common sense.

But even newbie linux mint, aka ubuntu, aka debian wiped hole critical boot data, so what.

I also heard windi 10 from redmoon also is a disc destroyer and does not care about boot records.

In short, we should blame the lazy programmers who are unable to think of every possible situation how their written code is used.
A proper coding starts with a proper design and sadly those "smart", "nice", "well educated" programmers just do not really do their job well.

That was not the first and not hte last time some piece of junk broke, deleted, caused errors.

Well comparing to windi 95, which is used even these days, just renamed to windi 10, is the greater evil in these regards.

Nope your box is not stable.

Someone just did not report a bug in a certain amount of time and so the stable request went through regardless of hidden flaws and other insane possibilities which just causes issues.

The ~amd64 branch is as "stable", "chocolate", "call it whatever you like", as the amd64 branch for example.

The most stable box would be, a box not connected to the internet and therefore you do not have a need to update it, so any working piece of software keeps on working because you do not have to update it. Saves you the energy on the cpu cycles and just does the job.

We just always see the stuff which breaks but we should also see the stuff which just works.

--

I had yesterday the pleasure to install windi 10 operating system on a new hardware.
Installation time is as long or longer as in the windi 95 days. WE talk about installation on a brand new hardware, dvd -> ssd
No driver working out of the box. RAndom freezing
after i purged the recovery and did two times a clean install because of some reason the box hang during reboot (we talk about a fresh install, from mirnosoft downlaoded iso from mircrosoft.com, the license key is taken from uefi slick bios ofc)

Compared to that crap "shipped" with any new hardwarel, full with "awesomeness" "greatness" "works for everyone" "knows how i want to use a computer", gentoo works such well that it should not be mentioned at all that something is broken from time to time.

BTW windi 10 looks as the gnome 2.0 which i ditched years ago, but gnome 2.0 worked faster and less error ridden.

This is completely wrong. User is mixing ~amd64 with amd64, leading to problems. There is another thread about it...

Nope. From time to time you will be reminded that you are running ~arch, it is inevitable. It is however easier to run full ~arch than keywording big chunks of ~arch packages on an ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=arch system.

Do you know anything about forum etiquette? Don't hijack a 2 year old thread for an unrelated support question.
