Would it be possible to use Bittorent style p2p with emerge?

I had this bright spark last week while downloading some large files.

If emerge had the option of using bittorent for download emerge updates in the same way snapshots are availible then in may help decrease server load espeically at peak times.

This is assuming that server load is currentily an issue and that this idea has never been tried!

Let me know whether any one thinks this is a good idea.
I don't have the abillity to implement it myself.
So if anyone would like use the idea or make an official proposal that would be great!

just some mind game...

For huge files you can use 'deltup' which just sends over differences to files you already got. It uses kind of a wrapper for sending requests.

correct me if I'm wrong: If there is a torrent-master for distfiles, it should not be a great hassle to implement it as a fetch-method

Quite an old topic but I have the same question...(I wasn't able to find the post mentionned)

Does Gentoo have any tools like an emerge-p2p to emerge our package from P2P network ?

I really like the P2P network and philosophy, as we all share files.

I know Ubuntu got some something like that, called apt-p2p (But I've never tried)

Thanks for your update !

I actually like this idea, it would make it somewhat easier to grab old packages that are out of the main tree. (And some packages seem to drop off all the mirrors VERY quickly, making it hard to upgrade if you need to hit an intermediate step due to dependencies)

Yes, this would be a big plus. I'd participate to get this feature.

just wanted to say that I would gladly help with this if it became an available feature as I have a sheevaplug that runs 24/7 as a seedbox, amongst other things.
Increasingly becoming a 2 channel audio nut!
