Is there any sort of menu editing tool (like e16menuedit) for e17? I can't seem to find any.

No, there isn't. But you can emerge gnome-menus. It has very little dependency, quite unlike what the package name suggests.

Has anyone tried out the Enlightenment team's own E17 overlay?: http://trac.enlightenment.org/e/wiki/Gentoo

I don't need menus, I need to edit the gigantic menus that came from KDE ;)

I'll figure it out via console.

Also, e17 + ecomorph = ridiculously beautiful & amusing. Tuning this up is like playing a game, too fun.

Thanks, trying it out now. ;)

niifaq seems to be offline right now?

EDIT: Official enlightenment overlay added and emerge -pv @enlightenment ran successful. Running e17 always feels like a fresh breeze. :D

I know using an overlay incurs having to shut the friendliness up when things break...

Does anyone else sometimes gets hangups after extended sessions when logging out? Restarting xdm via ssh fixes it, but maybe I got a botched config somewhere...

Oh yeah, I use the niifaq overlay... happy Easter...

Just busy ditching hal from my system because of the switch to xorg-server 1.8... he can feel it already... his mind is going...

but elementary with the dbus USE-flag depends on hal, even when e_dbus is compiled without it. :( Meh... Any chance this'll be fixable?

I guess it will take time. I don't think there has been much effort towards removing hal from e.

Ho-hum... I'm currently back to using Gnome. Less candy, but MUCH more responsive now that hal is out of the way...

Even with ecomorph, e17 was pretty, but suboptimal from a usability pov (I'm on a fairly dated machine here).

P.S.: And yes, e_modules-drawer always failing to compile is a PITA too. :(

I think e17 is a myth. I've used e16 for years. About 2 months ago I gave up waiting for a release of e17 and moved on to compiz-fusion. This thing will never reach stable status. Ok you can install the pre-alpha stage and play with it knowing that it might freeze (it's development code, after all). I've even done it about 2 years ago to take a look at the thing.

My point is: perhaps less features and more frequent releases could bring users to e17. The way it is, except for the very adventurous people who wanna try repository code, few will stick with e17 for real use at the job.

And I'm a guy who really likes the enlightenment manager. I gave up e16 just 2 months ago on my desktop, and here on my notebook from where I'm typing the text, I'm still on E16. But at the moment, compiz is rulling the scene. Perhaps I might see a stable e17 release before I die of old age... :?

Agreed. Gave up on e17 after years of waiting for a stable release. Been using e16 forever, but its showing its age with xorg-server-1.7.6.

Compile error while emerge evas

Code: Select all

/usr/lib64/libevas.a: could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
libtool: install: error: relink `module.la' with the above command before installing it
Thus i cannot emerge other components of e17 such as ecore

Here is the overlay I use
layman -o http://svn.enlightenment.org/svn/e/trun ... erlays.xml -f -a efl

Weird, after reading this I emerged it from the niifaq overlay and it built without issue. The only problem I initially had with niifaq was eina because I had the threads USE flag turned on in make.conf. Once I realized why it kept failing I emerge eina with USE="-threads" and it built.

Right now my only problem is ecomorph. Module is loaded, and I get transparency in konsole (so I know the compositing is working), but none of the decorations are working. No fire, explosions, wobble, etc.

This problem was there for around 24hours. It has been since fixed in svn. You don't need to give -threads now.

Not sure about ecomorph though. I have stopped using any form of composite. If you really want help, you could ask jeffdameth (the maintainer of ecomorph) at #e.

Nice, I'll rebuild it then :)

I've just installed the 9999 version of e17 according to the instructions in the wiki. It looks very slick but I'm unable to adjust the size of the fonts. I've got the DPI set in my xorg.conf and it has been working properly for years. I got to the Settings --> Fonts page but in both the basic and advanced mode, I seem to be unable to make any changes to the fonts actually used by e17. I've restarted e17 and that didn't help either. The ~/.e/e/fonts/ directory remains empty and I didn't see any files that seemed useful under /usr/share/enlightenment.

Right now the fonts are miniscule. They're even smaller than the e16 default fonts which were pretty darned small. When e17 started up I picked the "Scalable" profile in hopes that it might easily lead to more readable fonts. But so far, no joy.

I'm stuck.

You can change the font sizes by using the Scale Settings. You can change the size of the fonts by setting the "Custom Scaling factor".

Thank you. Yes, the Scaling Factor is just what I needed. I also found that I needed to check a checkbox in the upper lefthand corner of the Font dialog in order to be able to use that to change font sizes.

I'm searching for a replacement for kde-3.5.10. I've been using kde since 1.2 or thereabouts. I've tried kde-4 several times but it aways seems to be horribly broken. I really liked e-16 so I thought I would give e-17 a go. It seems to be broken in exactly the same way kde-4 seems broken: dual monitors and virtual desktops versus multiple desktops. I like the "one big desktop" metaphor and I like to use the mousewheel to switch between desktops. In e-17 each monitor is independent. So I have to split a background image into two files than then load one half on one monitor and the other half on the other. Even worse, the monitors switch desktops independently which totally breaks the "one big desktop" metaphor.

The icing on the cake is that pseudo-transparency is broken so all my beloved desktop apps (such as GKrellm and Conky) look like crap. Since both kde and enlightenment went down the same path, basically breaking everything I liked about the earlier versions, I'm pretty sure there was a good reason for it, but I sure haven't seen it yet.

It looks like I might have to live without transparent GKRellm and Conky and terminals but I'm hoping there is a setting somewhere that will tie the two screens back together again.

BitJam, use real transparency. ecomp is the compositor for E17, that in conjunction with a terminal which supports transparency (like x11-terms/terminal or konsole) and you'll have transparent consoles.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've got compositing turned off in order to enable vsync so dvd playback looks good. The vsync verus composite tradeoff is part of why I found the disabling of pseudo-transparency so frustrating. When I have to choose between wobbly windows and good dvd playback, I'll pick the good dvd playback every time.

Last night I read in a post on the Ubuntu boards that e-17 provides key bindings to switch desktops in tandem. I have absolutely no idea why this is not the default. I tried using the key bindings GUI to switch all the keys over to tandem switching but I was not successful. It was like having to play a video game in order to get anything done. All the config files are binary now so I'm forced to use the GUI. I could understand compiling text config files into a binary format to improve performance but I don't like being completely locked out of adjusting settings with the keyboard instead of the mouse. If it came with decent defaults this wouldn't be so bad but when things get screwed up, (for example if the scaling makes the DPI too large then the GUI becomes unusable) I have to trash my binary settings and then spend time using the GUI redoing all the work to get things readable again. It is like a bad joke.

I've started working on hacking e-16 to get it to do exactly what I want. Unlike kde-3, it looks like e-16 is still being maintained. This is a lot more fun than struggling with kde-4 or e-17.

I love kde-3 and e-16 but I seem to be allergic to kde-4 and e-17. I guess I'm a dinosaur.

Not a dinosaur, as I just switched off of e16 this past weekend (after having switched off of e17 to e16 for better menus). The current e16 is really nice, but I was in the mood for e17 again.

When KDE-4.4.3 showed up in my -uDp world this morning, I unmerged the lot. So my only wm is e. Now when a new glibc/gcc combo hits portage and I feel masochistic enough to emerge -e world, it won't take as long.
