Gentoo gaming-sources and preemptive patch

From the Gentoo Linux Installation Instructions:
(...) There is also a gaming-sources kernel optimized for game-playing responsiveness that works wonderfully for this purpose when the "Preemptible kernel" option is enabled.
I am currently running a gaming-sources kernel and would like to know if it has the preemptive patch enabled by default. From the installation doc I asume it doesn't and that I need to enable it by hand, but it isn't really clear. I'd really like to give it a try.

In case I need to enable it, how do I this? Can I do it from xconfig?

If it's there by default, is there any way to check if my running kernel has is enabled?

I have a few more doubts about thw performance of the system, if you wish to help, please check http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=100836.

Thanks a lot.

you can look in your .config file in your /usr/src/linux directory

do a:

Code: Select all

cat /usr/src/linux/.config | grep CONFIG_PREEMPT
if it says:
CONFIG_PREEMPT=y

then your good. If its not enabled you can do it in menuconfig/xconfig. Go to Processor types and features and enable Preemptive kernel

Ok, thanks :)

BTW, I just noticed there were no CPU-oriented optimizations in my .config nor any special GCC flags in my Makefile. Is this fine? I mean, will I still get an optimized kernel if I compile it with genkernel or do I have to set all these manually?
