Knetworkmanager consolekit error [solved]

Post by keba » Tue Mar 09, 2010 7:34 pm

Hi,

I know, knetworkmanager (which was supposed to get released with KDE SC 4.4) is masked. I tried it anyway and (of course) I ran into an error. Now this is strange, because I have been using an older (svn) version from kde-testing on another computer and it worked perfectly. Anyway, I'd be glad to know how I can get it to work... Here is what I did:

1) I unmasked knetworkmanager

Code: Select all

echo "kde-misc/knetworkmanager" >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
2) I emerged it, no errors

3) I logged into KDE SC 4.4 and issued "knetworkmanager" in konsole, this is what I got
A window telling me:

Code: Select all

KNetworkManager cannot start because the installation is misconfigured. System DBus policy does not
allow it to provide user settings; contact your system administrator or distribution.
KNetworkManager will not start automatically in future.
And the console output:

Code: Select all

knetworkmanager(5690)/kdeui (Wallet) KWalletDLaucher::getInterface: The kwalletd service has been registered
knetworkmanager(5690)/Network Management (NetworkManager backend) NMDBusSettingsService::NMDBusSettingsService: Unable to register service QDBus error("org.freedesktop.Error.AccessDenied", "Connection ":1.74" is not allowed to own the service "org.freedesktop.NetworkManagerUserSettings" due to security policies in the configuration file")

Is your user part of the plugdev group? check with the 'id' command. Furthermore, why not use the gnome nm-applet that is known to work better with NetworkManager?

Yes, my user is part of the plugdev group... And I'm not using nm-applet because I'm using kde and I prefer a native program/applet, especially since it worked perfectly fine before (version from kde-testing) and it was released with kde sc 4.4 (except on Gentoo (?)). Installing nm-applet would mean that I'd have to install a lot of gnome stuff and I'm not even sure how well it would work with kde... So that's not really a solution.

I'm having the same problem with knetworkmanager myself (and nm-applet aswell for what its worth). The only temporary solution I've had is to run `ck-launch-session` in a terminal and then `knetworkmanager` to get it to start.

This isn't really ideal but it can get it to launch. Hoping someone knows how to get it to work automagically.

If you run a custom session (like .xinitrc) you need to put ck-launch-session in front of your session manager, like so:

Code: Select all

ck-launch-session startxfce4

Try to update networkmanager to version 8.0

knetworkmanager was built against that version.

Still, solid will show you as if you were using 7.0 :)

I am running knetworkmanager successfully without any problems at all. The only problem that sometimes appears is when the small window with options (when you right click it stays on the window).

I built knetworkmanager with the consolekit useflag. Re-emerging without it solved my problem. I'm having quite some other problems with consolekit though: it doesn't let me mount my usb-memory-sticks and stuff like that. consolekit was somhow pulled in automatically, so now I need a way to either configure it the right way or get rid of it...

I re-emerged hal without neither policykit nor consolekit useflags, now everything works fine.

BTW, knetworkmanager is working fine and it's a great app. Don't hesitate to install it just because it's masked.
