Yep, Carlos is late again...

I wonder if the entire thing has gone in hiatus...

Give em a break. He's probably the only one working on it. Maybe you could help him out instead of complaining in the forums every week when he's late. Its a quality newsletter thats worth the wait.

If you don't like reading my posts by all means don't, they are labelled.

I'm generally worried about the state of the GWN, several sections have already died a slow and painful death after being in hiatus for a long time. The GWN sadly is a mere shadow of it's former glory, GWN was suppose to be the link between developers and users so we could see what was going on, but it's been weeks since we had a serious update on the status of development. Where are we heading and where are we currently?

I tried submitting stuff to Carlos, it didn't get printed nor did I even recieve a reply explaining what needed to be altered for it to be of value to the GWN.

Didn't know that. I have noticed its dwindeling in content, but I've just assumed that its becasue it changed responsibilites (owners), and it'd take time to get back to its origional gwn goodness. But maybe i'm just too patient. If it is really dying, then Carlos should ask for help here in the forums or something, so dedicated users like LoveChild can help with all their hearts content. I still say though to give the guy a break, its a tough project to keep up with, I know i'd never get it out on time if it was my responsibility.

Hehehe, it appears that there is an open position if you're willing to try again
The Gentoo Weekly Newsletter is looking for one or more contributors to compile the Gentoo Linux Security section each week. No security expertise is needed because the information is gathered from GLSAs and bug reports; all you need is a solid command of written English. Send us an email if you're interested

i think this might be more up his(or bssteph's) alley.
The Gentoo Linux Project is seeking additional kernel developers to fill in some holes in the kernel team. Applicants should have a fair amount of experience with the Linux kernel. Send an email to Brian Jackson if you're interested.

I wish I could consider my kernel experience "fair". I can patch, do fairly trivial stuff, and follow concepts pretty well, but that's it. And then there's that time thing. ;)

Did you follow the link at the bottom of every GWN?
10. Contribute to GWN

Interested in contributing to the Gentoo Weekly Newsletter? Send us an email.
The email link is to mailto:gwn-feedback@gentoo.org , not to Carlos personally.

Sending unsolicited manuscripts to Carlos is not necessarily the best way to help out. I know for a fact that help backstopping a number of the sections would be greatly appreciated - but the best sort of help would be agreeing to take on or share responsibility for a particular section (especially one of the ones that has been forced on hiatus frequently) on a weekly basis.

Just a thought for the masses:

One: Set up e-mailadresses for each part of the GWN.

Two: Make forms for submitting stuff to each part. Put a link to it in each GWN right under the section-header, ie:

Gentoo Security
Want to contribute? Click here

Three: In the e-mail GWN, make so it prints the E-mail adress instead.

Four: Assign the adresses to specific ppl.

Five: Make sure there is one Manager of the whole thing. Everybody has a deadline to submit, ie mail their section to the manager.

Six: The manager reviews the submissions and if nessesary returns for improvment.

Seven: All submissions are put together into the GWN. Sections that has not been submitted get to go on Hiatus this week. The GWN should be released 00:00 GMT. If not manually then automatically (Requires the GWN to be compleated earlier).

This way:
- no section should dissapear since suggestions can be sent to the appropriate person and not to a "man in the middle".
- the GWN will always be out on monday no matter where you happen to be.
- the manager gets some of the load of and can start to actually manage the thing. IE give ppl the sack if they don't submit in time. Check through quality etc... A manager is not supposed to sift through a shitload of mail to make sure it goes to the apropriate person. That's a secrataries job, and secrataries are expensive

Or you can do everything in some sort ov CVS-mode or whatever... the structure still works.
