Four packages. Now I want to do an "emerge -ev world" and proceed with my install but emerge wants to downgrade everything which is generating blocks, circular dependencies, slot conflicts and masked packages. I'm in portage hell.
I've trimmed my USE flags down to almost nothing, though "USE="-*" emerge -ev world" only gives me a slightly different variation of my emerge hairball. I am doing an amd64 install but stable, not ~amd64, and using 2008.0 for now though 10.0 is my preference but both have the same emerge problems. Maybe I'm so mentally fatigued from trying to get a clean install that I'm overlooking something obvious. If somebody can spot my problem I'd be eternally grateful if you would point it out to me. I think it says a lot for my fondness for Gentoo that after all this aggravation I'm still not willing to give up. Ultimately I'm trying to wean myself off my Windows XP desktop by installing Gentoo and running XP as a KVM guest for the Windows programs I still need (Quicken, etc). I successfully tested for a few months, experimenting with different things then decided to install fresh. I somehow managed to get all the way through to gnome (mostly by just charging forward, installing new packages but not rebuilding anything) but had the "settings daemon restarted too many times" problem and though I got rid of the error I could never get themes and sounds to work despite trying the fixes suggested in the thread dedicated to that problem. But that's another challenge for another day, although that is the reason I wanted to start with a pristine, stable tree installation. Anyway, I would be really grateful for any advise getting past this problem. I really don't understand how a brand new install that only differs from the stage3 tarball by 6 core packages can be so borked up.
