xorg-server-1.5 and mounting devices

  • Quote

Post by John5788 » Sat Apr 11, 2009 10:02 pm

I just upgraded to the new stable xorg-server, and I have a feeling the HAL stuff is interfering with how my mounting worked with gnome-2.24.

I had my /etc/fstab setup along with udev to recognize my devices (phone, usb drive, mp3 player, cd drive) as mountable devices and placed them in my "Places" on the left side of nautilus. but now this functionality has been broken

none of my devices show up, unless I plug it in. Even when i plug it in, I cannot mount it like normal. Nothing happens when i click on the devices in Places.

Additionally, nautilus reports that I have a CD/DVD drive, but i cant use it. It wont eject, and it won't recognize or let me browse a cd.

how to fix?

And you upgraded just the xorg-server now? Not Gnome?

did you try setting up the disk-partition use flag in hal?

[ebuild R ] sys-apps/hal-0.5.11-r8 USE="X acpi crypt laptop -apm -debug -dell -disk-partition -doc (-selinux)" 0 kB

I dont need it, thus disabled, but in your case it might actually help.

I didn't have it set, but I just set it and it brought a new dependency: sys-apps/parted into the recompile. I restarted hal, but nautilus still wont mount my usb drive when I click it.

Because I have a similar problem in KDE, which entries did you remove from the fstab?
Did you remove the entries that refer to the usb-stick, phone, etc? Did you also remove the entry that is for the cdrom?
After that, did you restart hal?

Thank you

here is my fstab

Code: Select all

$ cat /etc/fstab
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# noatime turns off atimes for increased performance (atimes normally aren't
# needed; notail increases performance of ReiserFS (at the expense of storage
# efficiency). It's safe to drop the noatime options if you want and to
# switch between notail / tail freely.
#
# The root filesystem should have a pass number of either 0 or 1.
# All other filesystems should have a pass number of 0 or greater than 1.
#
# See the manpage fstab(5) for more information.
#

# <fs> <mountpoint>	<type> <opts> <dump/pass>

# NOTE: If your BOOT partition is ReiserFS, add the notail option to opts.
/dev/sda1 /boot ext2 noauto,noatime	1 2
/dev/sda3 / ext3 noatime 0 1
/dev/sda2 none swap sw 0 0
#/dev/sdb1 /mnt/sdb1	vfat noauto,user	0 0
#/dev/android /mnt/android	vfat noauto,user	0 0
#/dev/sansa /mnt/sansa	vfat noauto,user	0 0
#/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom	auto noauto,user,ro	0 0
#/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy	auto noauto 0 0

# glibc 2.2 and above expects tmpfs to be mounted at /dev/shm for
# POSIX shared memory (shm_open, shm_unlink).
# (tmpfs is a dynamically expandable/shrinkable ramdisk, and will
# use almost no memory if not populated with files)
shm /dev/shm	tmpfs nodev,nosuid,noexec	0 0
i commented out sdb1, android, sansa, and cdrom. then they started mounting in gnome again.

sdb1 was for any USB drive, android is for my G1, sansa is for my MP3 player.

Still Solid (KDE) does not automount the external hdd.

Which version of hal are you running? I am running 0.5.12_rc1, could it be buggy?

With a list that long, did your try a:

Code: Select all

revdep-rebuild
and/or

Code: Select all

emerge @preserved-rebuild
?

You should probably do both, I usually do:

Code: Select all

emerge -aNDu @system @world ; emerge @preserved-rebuild ; revdep-rebuild
when there's a long list of kind of low level stuff. Hasn't failed me yet.

In fact, you are quite right. As a further point of fact, declaring a USB drive or an optical drive in /etc/fstab will blind the hal/dbus system to the existence of said drive.

Adding one's user name to the plugdev, cdrw, cdrom, and usb groups in /etc/group is the final touch needed to make the hal/dbus magick work.

Blessed be!

revdep-rebuild came clean, nothing to emerge

emerge @preserved-rebuild gave me this message:

Code: Select all

!!! '@preserved-rebuild' is not a valid package atom.
!!! Please check ebuild(5) for full details.
and I am in all of the groups except for cdrw, yet I can burn cds just fine?

My use name is added in the above groups (plus the disk and haldaemon group). I also emerge hal-0.5.11-r8.
Still Solid does not mount the usb-stick or the external hdd.

What should I enable in the kernel for hal to automount any device that I plug in?

That's my fault, man. After I hit SUBMIT, I thought "What if this person isn't running portage 2.2.*??". I decided not to follow up right away hoping that you are running it, but I guess you're not. Aside, if there was something to rebuild, the revdep-rebuild would've caught it.

As for your actual issue, I don't know that I can be of much help then. :(

I don't use Gnome, I use KDE. I've been using xorg-server 1.5.* since not long after it hit the portage tree (a couple months I think). I didn't run into this issue with KDE3 or 4.

Take a look at one of my kernel seeds, with a focus on the SCSI settings. Those are of paramount importance with libata (SATA) drivers, as well as automounting CD's and USB devices. Also, USB drivers are best compiled into the kernel. Setting them as modules can lead to weird things like USB ports shutting themselves off.

My .config file is similar to your seeds.
I enabled the

CONFIG_ATA=y

Is this important?

Absolutely. It turns on all the libata options.
