Adding one's user name to the plugdev, cdrw, cdrom, and usb groups in /etc/group is the final touch needed to make the hal/dbus magick work.

Take a look at one of my kernel seeds, with a focus on the SCSI settings. Those are of paramount importance with libata (SATA) drivers, as well as automounting CD's and USB devices. Also, USB drivers are best compiled into the kernel.
