Anyone else having memory issues?

My mem usage keeps going up...and up....and up.......not very fast mind you, but if I'm on for a couple hours it gets up to around 500mb...

Running 4.1.2 with amd64, with the effects turned on.

Put qt-gui in your packages.keywords.

Success - full compilation, and everything appears to be running normally. This will now be my primary desktop - let's see if I can break something!

To accept off profile keywords on a specific version of a package prefix the category/package-version atom with an '=', in this case use =x11-libs/qt-gui-4.4.1 instead of x11-libs/qt-gui-4.4.1.

i just found out something else wrong with konqueror exit kde and any config changes i make are undone.

i haven been through every setting i could thinks of but what causes these problems with konqueror beats the heck out of me.

I have the same problems with Konqueror in KDE 3. Really f*cking annoying if you ask me and I'm not clear why/how that could happen. I'm also annoyed that starting any program from the command line results in the KDE 4 version starting by default instead of kde 3.

i fixed some stuff by upgrading to 3.5.10 (startkde + kdelibs mainly ) but my 3.5 still is borked:

* the konqueror toolbar issue is still there
* kwallet won't start automatically [edit: readded manually, works now]
* kmail is asking for pass everytime and forgot its imap (receive) settings [edit: wallet now working, incoming settings still lost (when testing by copying backup .kde3.5 to .kde)]
* firefox without decoration... [edit: press F11 twice solves this ..

))
* CRTL Key doesn't work... [ edit: compiz-wrapper issue solved, bug when not starting using kdm]

might be some xorg /compiz issues during the 4.1.2 update ? any fixes or bug reports?

Unmerge Qt 4.3. If it tries to get in again, mask it - you won't need it.

I have the same impression, or to be correct, it seems to me the settings are not even applied once, rather than lost on KDE exit. For example, I can't convince Konqueror to open popups in tabs instead of new windows, nor to do the same with externally called URLs. If this is indeed a bug, it's certainly a regression since I didn't experience such a problem with KDE 4.1.1.

I haven't (yet!) experienced the problem with settings not being saved on 4.1, but during previous big kde upgrades I have had problems when the relevant ~/.kde configuration directory has carried over from previous versions. Normally renaming the directory while kde is not running, and then starting kde will give a completely fresh config directory. If that doesn't solve the problem, you can mv the copy back to ~/.kde (or ~/.kde4.1 if that was the relevant directory). Note - .kde maybe a symbolic link to .kde4.1 or such. Check your configuration and adjust the commands accordingly before proceeding

i found a way to get buttons back on the konqueror toolbar.

1 open the toolbar config for the main toolbar
2 remove all currently listed buttons click ok
3 repeat 1 and manually add the buttons you want.

this works for the main toolbar and lasts through both closing konqueror and restart kde. i don't know about any other toolbars.

a few other things

shortcut settings stay in effect after closing and reopening konqueror but will reset after a kde restart

the main konqueror config still seems to work properly

the dolphin issue is still in effect.

I haven't had any problems with toolbars...I've made changes to dolphin's toolbar and the changes stuck. My menu though was a big mess when I first logged into kde 4. I couldn't make any changes to it. Deleting my ~/.kde directory and resetting the menu fixed the problem.

After using it a bit more I've found that it stops eating memory when my mem usage is around 17% of my 2gigs..both X and kwin take up a good chunk of memory at that point. This is after using programs like dolphin, konsole, kopete, and firefox for about an hour and then closing all of them. I don't really have any plasmoids/widget things active either other than the stuff that comes by default with the panel.

I thought KDE 4 was supposed to use less memory than 3.5? I'm posting this from another amd64 gentoo box with 2 gigs of ram, and with kde 3.5.9 running and under the same usage that I outlined above it never is above around 8 or 9% usage Both boxes only use around 3% when started with fluxbox, so it's not due to non-KDE stuff.

I guess it's not that big of a problem as I still have plenty of memory to spare..but I'm just curious as to what the cause is.

but, i simply don't have extra time to read 30 forum pages of info...

to tweak various settings...

to play with my computer when i need to be doing other things...

yet, i want to stay with gentoo...

thats because the toolbar issue is with konqueror under kde3.

the dolphin issue (on page 6 i think) is that in kde3 everything opens with dolphin instead of konqueror.

No, but a fairly large one (in comparison to the old meta-packages). For a full KDE install you can use @kde-4
