I've had to go through a Gentoo reinstall, and when I've re-installed ut, using the ebuild provided in the bugfix, when I try to run it I get this output.
$ ut
Unreal engine initialized

appError called:

Executing UObject::StaticShutdownAfterError
Executing USDLClient::ShutdownAfterError

SDL client shut down.

Any ideas?

There error is here:
Couldn't initialize SDL: No available video device
Have you tried switching to the OpenGL driver? Apparently the SDL driver is causing a problem.

I've tried even compiling the game without sdl available, and also by changing the engine to OpenGL in both my ~/.loki and in the /opt/unreal-tournament directories and no change. :(

Thanks for the answer.

When using the ebuild on that page with my GOTY CD portage says this:
"Unsupported UT version detected"
"Continuing anyway but the game may not work correctly. It is recommended"
"that you install from the original CD or DVD instead."
And then dies when decompressing Maps/AS-Frigate.unr.uz

Emerging the standard unreal-tournament-goty ebuild in portage works, but the game isn't playable due to the speed bug with newer CPU's.

Using the regular UT ebuild with goty edition cd won't work due to the the maps. I was previously able to install the ebuild and decompress the maps manually after the install (I actually made a cd with the maps already decompressed after the first time.) It looks like it just won't do it at all now.

Try my ebuild, dated 2007-05-21 10:42, which was the last one before James Le Cuirot's rewrites. Anyway, debug the ebuild and add a meaningful entry to the bug. I won't be fixing it - I've switched from Gentoo to Arch.

Ebuilds will not fix the speed problem, which is a system configuration issue.

Regarding sound issues. I was having the exact same problems (same sound card too). My first sound problem was the one you encountered. I discovered that my KDE notification sounds were using the audio device when the UT window came up (I have notifications play through Sox instead of arts so that may play a part). Disabling KDE sound notifications fixed that problem.

You're still using openal. So set openal to use alsa with 2 speakers, at the right samping rate for your soundcard.
