audacious won't play mp3's

  • Quote

Post by dkostic » Mon Aug 06, 2007 5:32 am

Hey everybody, I've emerged audacious and lame, but for some reason I can't get audacious to load the libmp3lame.so plugin it needs to play mp3's. I've tried copying and symlinking the /usr/lib/libmp3lame.so over to /usr/lib/audacious/Input/ directory, and when I start audacious it complains that it's an invalid plugin. Anybody know what to do in this situation?

Did you enable the mp3 USE flag?

Second question about something you probably did already: have you tried revdep-rebuild?

Erm ... which version of audacious-plugins do you use? Symlinking or copying the libmp3lame.so from /usr/lib to the input plugins directory will not work, btw. In my version the MP3 output plugin is called libmadplug.so (WARNING: it's not the same as libmodplug.so!). Just for completeness, could you also add the output of "emerge audacious audacious-plugins -pv"?

Roger that.

Here's the output...
Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] media-sound/audacious-1.3.2 USE="nls -chardet" 0 kB
[ebuild R ] media-plugins/audacious-plugins-1.3.3 USE="alsa esd mad* nls opengl oss vorbis -aac -adplug -arts -chardet -flac -jack -lirc -modplug -musepack -pulseaudio -sid -sndfile -timidity -tta -wavpack -wma" 0 kB

Total: 2 packages (2 reinstalls), Size of downloads: 0 kB
I have libmad.so, but no libmadplug.so. :? Is that the plugin your version of audacious is using for mp3 support?

Yes, it is - I think I already see the cause of your problem: Do you see the little star behind the mad USE flag in the line of audacious-plugins?
[ebuild R ] media-plugins/audacious-plugins-1.3.3 USE="alsa esd mad* nls opengl oss vorbis -aac -adplug -arts -chardet -flac
This means that the next time you build audacious-plugins the mad USE flag will be enabled, so you should rebuild audacious-plugins, then MP3 playback will work for you.

You were right, but I had to also delete the /var/tmp/portage/media-plugins/audacious-plugins-1.3.3 directory (I tried without doing this and it didn't work). Anybody know why this is?

(But audacious plays mp3's now. Much obliged! )
