Can't start Xorg or emerge ati-drivers

  • Quote

Post by turboedvo » Sat Feb 03, 2007 5:31 pm

Well, I was under the impression that I didn't need to install ati-drivers so long as I compiled support for my ATI Radeon Mobility X300 (in a Dell D610) into the kernel. I tried to setup X, but I can't get it to start. Here is the Xorg.0.log:
X Window System Version 7.1.1
Release Date: 12 May 2006
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0, Release 7.1.1
Build Operating System: UNKNOWN

I also cannot emerge ati-drivers, but I would think that I should still be able to run X alright. Does anyone have any ideas about why I can't do it? I made sure that I compiled DRM as a kernel module rather than directly into the kernel and emerged x11-drm first, but that didn't change anything. I'm running the 2.6.19-r5 kernel.

The only other thing I can think of is that in my make.conf, I had VIDEO_CARDS="fglrx" rather thann VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" when I emerge X11-xorg. I don't know if that would make a difference or not, but there you go if it helps.

Thanks for the help.

Yep, that worked when I tried it. The other thing that I realized was that I had fogotten to compile keyboard and mouse as input devices in my make.conf. That has never been a problem in the past, but this time around, X wouldn't recognize them. Once I got those taken care of, it worked great. Thanks for the help.
