To be sure, I recompiled whole system overnight. It's the second time -Os gives me this kind of trouble, I'm never going to use it again (except for maybe livecd).

I was just asking because I might have to make a filter-flags.

I thought so, all I can say that beryl 0.1 from svn (emerged a few days before you updated the overlay) worked with -Os (whole system/world was emerged with -Os).

Small report: with beryl 0.1.1-r1 and re-emerging cairo with pdf flag,
beryl is back to being smooth and fast and the border artifacts when
moving a window are gone too ... strange but I'm not complaining :D

Uhhmm :?
"stable" cairo doesn't have X or pdf useflag and beryl doesn't claim to need a masked cairo version

When I emerged beryl-0.1.1-r1 it failed with the error message:

Code: Select all

re-emerge
cairo with X and pdf flags.

So I did. Then beryl compiled ... and worked. Like
I said, strange. I have cairo 1.2.4

beryl now in portage - how to stop using overlay

  • Quote

Post by joe_piskor » Wed Oct 25, 2006 7:29 pm

The subject says it all - do I just need to delete the overlay and do an update?

Thanks...

I've had a lot of heartache trying to get Xgl/beryl/nvidia drivers/Gnome to work. Black screens, black windows, white cube faces, x not starting automatically, you name it. I started from an Xgl + compiz-quinnstorm install that worked pretty reliably. Xgl was emerged from a portage overlay fetched from svn.xgl-coffee.org. I updated this overlay, and emerged beryl from it on monday this week. Lots of problems as mentioned above. Then I found on Tuesday that beryl had been incorporated into the portage tree. With the beta nvidia-drivers-1.0.9626 I was able to delete the xgl overlay.

After a lot of frustration it seems to be a simple matter of emergeing:

nvidia-drivers-1.0.9626
xorg-x11-7.1
beryl-0.1.1 (or better - I notice 0.1.1-r1 is already in portage tree)
gnome-2.16.0 (an re-emerge of gnome-2.14 would probably serve here, but I was hankering after a go with 2.16)

There's an awful lot of info on various Xgl/AIGLX/Beryl/Compiz threads, but now that beryl is in portage, if you're an nvidia graphics cards user, just try emergeing the above - you may be pleasantly surprised.

My notebook pc has an nVidia Quadro4 GoGL 500 with 64Mb of RAM - it's struggling a bit, being verging on the antique, particularly as it drives a 1600X1200 panel, but on the whole the experience to date - all of 2 days operation with beryl eye-candy - is damned good. I look forward to a few updates (beryl-0.1.1-r1 compiling as we speak).

The main thrust of this post is to say a huge thank you for all those involved in the development of Xgl, beryl and the nvidia-drivers. Clearly a big effort going on to get these up to scratch - keep up the good work.

the only 0.1.1-r1 I have is the beryl ebuild, but isn't that just like a meta build to bring in all the packages? Or does it actually build something now?

So what makes it 0.1.1-r1? Is there any difference at all in the other packages to make it like that?

Beryl-0.1.2 arrived. Now the rotation of the cube does not work, or at least looks very bad. The sides are switched, but the animation looks completely wrong. Extreme flickering...

Does anyone else have that problem? BTW, I'm nvidia user.

This release is *extremly* faster than the previous for me, and rotation works like a charm. I'm an intel (i915) user

Apparently, my xorg.conf wasn't configured correctly :?.

And this release indeed is quite faster!

EDIT: I wasn't a faulty xorg.conf. It seems as beryl or the nvidia-drivers don't seem to handle TwinView in the Clone mode very well. ie. LeftOf works, but Clone doesn't!

Kernel 2.6.18

  • Quote

Post by eealex » Thu Nov 16, 2006 7:04 am

Hi there,

Anyone got beryl works in the new stable kernel (2.6.18, r2)? I cannot get beryl (0.1.1, 0.1.2) working in that kernel but 2.6.17-r2. I am getting something GLXFBConfig error in the new kernel.

Though I don't have need to use 2.6.18 anyway.

By the way I am on Intel 855GM with AIGLX... Thanks in advance

P.S. I think this thread can be moved out from Unsupported Software, as Beryl is now in portage?

Yes, I have! I'm running gentoo-sources-2.6.18-r2 and beryl-0.1.2. But I use nvidia-drivers-1.0.9629 (and have other problems, see above ;-)).

Sure with ATI, but with xgl.

Hi R!tman,

I also have the Nvidia 9629 + gentoo-sources-2.6.18-r1. Working perfectly on single monitor (I don't have any twinview or like) for my desktop. However I am not sure what have changed in the 2.6.18 kernel. both beryl 0.1.1 and 0.1.2 works OK on 2.6.17 sources...
Anyway hope this can be a reference and would be great if someone can suggest the solution :)

How did you switch from 2.6.17 to 2.6.18? If you used "make oldconfig" you better check that manually. This borked my config up completly.

I first copy my .config to the new folder, and then

Code: Select all

# make menuconfig <-- To make sure some new options are OK
# make && make modules_install
And copy file and update boot loader appropriately. I always do this for updating to new kernel.

Hello everyone,

how good is Beryl!?!

Cheers for bringing the new release to our attention nesl247. And thanks to everyone for their discussion, which helped me troubleshoot my issues.

My personal experience is the visual effect works amazingly (on both my Nvidia 6200 and i855GM/AIGLX), and all those windows users are just envious on this...
But on the bad side, it is not uncommon that it hangs the whole machine. sometime I can just ssh into the machine and kill X, but sometime I have to push the reset button.. considering it is still 0.1.2 release and the visual effect it already made, I will say I am very satisfied with the work done by the Beryl developers...

Given the state development I'd say Beryl is pretty good. I run it on my Dell Precision M50 which has an nVidia Quadro4 GoGL 550 card with 64Mb video RAM. I suspect it's about the minimum spec to run Beryl, but even so it's pretty good. More than enough to impress passers by, and even the informed. I will be really happy when all the development is complete and the minor glitches ironed out.

all too true :( ... soon it will be time to stop adding plugins and get
this stuff so that it is stable or at least such that when it crashes it doesn't take
down the whole OS (it's just *wrong* that beryl can do that - but I
guess that's hardware drivers for you)[/quote]
