Hi all,
I've a laptop with a Radeon Mobility 7500 LW
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]
I've Xorg 7.0r1 with this config:
Section "Module"
Load "dbe"
Load "extmod"
Load "fbdevhw"
Load "glx"
Load "record"
Load "freetype"
Load "type1"
Load "dri"
Load "radeon"
Load "drm"
Load "GLcore"
Load "synaptics"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Videocard0"
Driver "radeon"
#Driver "ati"
VendorName "Videocard vendor"
BoardName "ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]"
Option "SWCursor" "true"
Option "DynamicClocks" "true"
Option "BusType" "AGP"
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
Option "SubPixelOrder" "RGB"
Option "AGPMode" "4"
#Option "AGPFastWrite" "true" (not supported by MB/VC)
Option "EnablePageFlip" "true"
Option "DDCMode" "true"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
EndSection
I've installed latest x11-drm but I still have low 3D perfomances...

here's glxgears FPS:
1907 frames in 5.2 seconds = 365.614 FPS
1938 frames in 5.0 seconds = 387.363 FPS
1938 frames in 5.0 seconds = 387.329 FPS

I've heard that ppl with this videocard reached 1300~1600 FPS
with DRI enabled...

but here all seems ok...have a look:

Hi I dont have a mobile ATI but have an ATI AIW 7200 AGP card and I get the following results
$ glxgears
6104 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1220.604 FPS
6099 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1219.780 FPS
6090 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1217.996 FPS
6091 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1218.009 FPS
1st difference with my system I see is that you use x11-drm, I dont I just use the kernel drm module
CONFIG_DRM=m
# CONFIG_DRM_TDFX is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_R128 is not set
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m
# CONFIG_DRM_MGA is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_SIS is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_VIA is not set
and for completeness
CONFIG_AGP=m
# CONFIG_AGP_ALI is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_ATI is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_AMD64 is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_INTEL is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_NVIDIA is not set
CONFIG_AGP_SIS=m
# CONFIG_AGP_SWORKS is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_VIA is not set
# CONFIG_AGP_EFFICEON is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_SAVAGE is not set
for SIS motherboard, the kernel modules get loaded by Xorg when it starts and dont need to be preloaded

Snippet from xorg.conf

Section "Module"
Load "dbe"
Load "extmod"
Load "type1"
Load "glx"
Load "dri"
Load "record"
Load "freetype"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "AIW"
Driver "ati"
BusID "PCI:1:0:0"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "true"
EndSection
You could try this approach and see how it goes.

well I was using drm from kernel just before trying x11-drm, anyway I will try now as you suggested and we'll see...
I notice you're using "ati" driver from xorg and not "radeon"...maybe this will do the trick...thanks for suggestion

You better use this how-to : http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-21 ... ml#2137276

I use a laptop with the same ati card and i get the following results from glxgears:

user@gentoo ~ $ glxgears
10172 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2034.314 FPS
10149 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2029.751 FPS
10149 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2029.637 FPS
10155 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2030.836 FPS
10171 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2034.082 FPS

well...maybe I just missed something but the configuration looks like the same as mine, but I'm still getting 400FPS

Will I need to downgrade Xorg?

I notice you're using "ati" driver from xorg and not "radeon"...
Actually does the same job , if you check the log "ati" is loaded and then when card is detected as radeon it loads "radeon". If you use "radeon" it is loaded and then when card is detected it loads "ati" then "radeon"

I think the problem is this:

ice@slAsh ~ $ LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 5.0.3 radeon (screen 0)
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/dri/tls/radeon_dri.so
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/dri/radeon_dri.so
libGL error: dlopen /usr/lib/dri/radeon_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/radeon_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
libGL error: unable to find driver: radeon_dri.so

was the same also with x11-drm

it seems it doesn't load the radeo_dri.so because can't find it, but where is it then? and why does it search for it there?

read somewhere...

the simplest solution seem to be a symlink to /usr/lib/dri where dri files should be...but there i have no radeon_so.ko :(

ice@slAsh ~ $ ls /usr/lib/dri
i810_dri.so mga_dri.so savage_dri.so tdfx_dri.so unichrome_dri.so
i915_dri.so s3v_dri.so sis_dri.so trident_dri.so
ice@slAsh ~ $

OK on my system Xorg -7.0

Code: Select all

# LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 5.0.3 radeon (screen 0)
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/radeon_dri.so
so

Code: Select all

# equery b /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/radeon_dri.so
[ Searching for file(s) /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/radeon_dri.so in *... ]
media-libs/mesa-6.4.2-r2 (/usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri/radeon_dri.so)
and just for the sake of it

Code: Select all

# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1] xorg-x11 *
Maybe you could try

Code: Select all

#emerge mesa
see if that gets you anywhere

Try adding the line VIDEO_CARDS="radeon" to /etc/make.conf and re-merging mesa, xorg-server, and x11-drm (if you're using it).
Firefox is spelled F-i-r-e-f-o-x - only the first letter capitalized (i.e. not FireFox, not Foxfire, FoxFire or whatever else a number of folk seem to think it to be called.) The preferred abbreviation is "Fx" or "fx".

FF = Final Fantasy.

that's right what I thought and did yesterday night:

Code: Select all

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild U ] media-libs/mesa-6.5.1_alpha20060701 [6.5.1_alpha20060515] VIDEO_CARDS="radeon* -i810* -mga* -s3virge* -savage* -sis* -trident* -via*"

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No] Y
while compiling I noticed:

Code: Select all

-DDEFAULT_DRIVER_DIR="/usr/X11R6/lib/modules/dri
which is surely one cause of the problem...

then it ended with:

Code: Select all

Oh, you're getting mesa CVS from 1 July? That one doesn't build for radeon. Try getting a newer version (I don't know about VLOS, but I'm using 6.5.1_pre20060714 from the Xgl overlay) or using 6.5-r3 from portage.
Firefox is spelled F-i-r-e-f-o-x - only the first letter capitalized (i.e. not FireFox, not Foxfire, FoxFire or whatever else a number of folk seem to think it to be called.) The preferred abbreviation is "Fx" or "fx".

FF = Final Fantasy.

ah...really lucky then....
how can I specify a location from where to pickup the ebuild just for this time?
or can I download it directly then make it use that one?

any how-to somewhere?
thanx!

I don't know how VLOS users update the overlay... I think you're best off just adding the line:

Code: Select all

=media-libs/mesa-6.5.1_alpha20060701
to /etc/portage/package.mask and that way you'll get the older version now, and the newer version when it comes out.

uhm...did as you suggested but it's still getting that package  really strange...

ok, got it doing

Code: Select all

emerge -a =media-libs/mesa-6.5-r3
since I'm also on the gentoo portage tree, but this time I think it got the alpha version from vlos overlay just 'cause was newer..

also compiling now is correct:

Code: Select all

-DDEFAULT_DRIVER_DIR='"/usr/lib/dri"
