GUI archive browser

  • Quote

Post by SDraconis » Sat May 13, 2006 8:40 pm

In my search for desktop Linux software, one thing I have yet to find is a good GUI archive browser (something similar to, say, WinRAR). I do not mean just a GUI archive program, since those don't offer much more than the console utils. What I mean is an app where you can browse through an archive like you'd browse through your filesystem using a file manager, entering folders, etc. Also, I've yet to find anything with the ability to just extract selected files only, without the entire directory structure of the archive above that point. Having these capabilities was sort of an unwritten base standard for any GUI archiving program I found for Windows, so it's been suprising that I have had such difficulty finding one for Linux. Does something like this exist, or am I just out of luck?

Just to avoid some of the flames: I have nothing against console utils, but in some applications a good GUI helps for productivity and display of information.

File-roller is pretty nice, but it does require Gnome.

On KDE, konqueror does exactly what it sounds like you're asking for, browsing archives, selectively extracting files (drag 'n' drop). Ark is another KDE program which handles archives, its interface reminds me a lot of WinZip, but you can't browse through folders in the same way you can with a file manager. It does, however, display folders in a tree heirarchy and you can selectively extract files without extracting the whole archive. I'm not sure about the GNOME side of things, but I'd imagine nautilus does the same things as konqueror.

Try file-roller.
There are 10 kinds of people: those who count in binary and those who don't.
People tend to not click links that say "Click Here!" So don't click here.

karchiver is good as well. In fact, I've had trouble with ark and auto-extraction of .tar.[gb]z? files, i.e. it dies, whereas karchiver works.
