Hi,

I was able to install civ 4 and the 1.52 patch, but the game will not run. I just get returned back to the prompt after few seconds. There is no CivilizationIV.ini file generated to edit. I use Cedega 5.0.3.

Anyone can help me?
Thanks

EDIT: I finally be able to run the game after deleted all files in my .cedega directory and re-install again. So, now I can start a game, but with strange behaviors. For example, I see 4 settlers instead one!! Some fonts are illisible...well, i'm tired now.

EDIT2: Dont know how but problem with settlers is gone. I found I can't launch the game if I check "Free Type and XRender in Cedega. Have you this option uncheck when playing the game or it is just me?

I have Civ 4 almost working in Wine. I can load the game, create a new world and start a game all just fine. There are few problems though:
  • The advisor 3D picture before a game starts is has funky colours, is upside-down and some vertices seem misplaced
  • Once an actual game starts all the land tiles are invisible or really messed up... of course that makes the game unplayable. The units all look perfect though (settlers for example).
  • The game crashes when attempting the first move
It is not easy to install and run, but if you can get it going it is really close to working. I used wine-cvs, BTW.

Just seen Cedega 5.1 is released today (15 Feb) which claims to now support Civilisation IV. You can get the main part through the Cedega update facility. Testing how it behaves at this moment.

it works as well as on windblows now with the latest pach on cedega 5.1, but it can crash sometimes, so safe game often.

It starts fine and I'm able to orientate myself in the menus but I get a black screen when changing character (leader) or starting a new game. I guess It's an ATI problem as usual as most nVidia users following that guide managed to play the game though it may crash sometimes if you have graphics on higher than "low". It's also said that it runs even better than Civ3.
This sounds like a problem I had with Windows. Some of the information at the civ forums suggest drivers but their conclusion was that it's not a hardware problem.

The fix is to basically reveal the whole map. In the python scripts you can set fishing/mining/starting advances to "reveal whole map." You still get fog of war, of course. The only downside is that you dont get to explore or anything and ...I hate the fix.

Go into assets/XML/technologies and open up Civ4TechInfos.xml. Replace all <bMapVisible>0</bMapVisible> with <bMapVisible>1</bMapVisible> and see if that doesn't work. There are other fixes but that was the only one that worked for me.

It's called the black map, look it up at the civ forums if that doesn't work for you.

(heh I want to play civ over here w/ my video card but mesa is masked -- along with all of its dependencies, "Modularized X, upstream release candidates.")
I'm experiencing a similar problem to RaZoR1394, with Cedega 5.1. Everything runs smoothly (including the intro videos) until I try to start a new game. The problem occurs either after I click OK to select my leader, or after I click anything (including OK) on the screen where you choose the level of difficulty. The music continues to play, but the graphics freeze. If I do anything to obscure the window (e.g. minimise it or place a window on top), the part that was obscured becomes black. The CPU utilisation of the game drops to miniscule levels (presumably just enough to play the music). Running the game full screen doesn't make a difference.

A similar problem occurs when I try to load a game (saved in Windows, using the same version of Civ4: 1.52). The saved game loads properly, but immeadiately after the map shows the graphics freeze.

I've tried the above solution, as well as installing DCOM98 and the OLEAUT32.DLL file. The problem remains.

Running Civ4 in Cedega 5.1 in debug mode (+ddraw,+x11drv,+dib,+bitmap,+seh,+tid), I get over 70MB of text output. Here is the end of it, at the point where it freezes after clicking OK on the Game Snapshot screen (where you choose the difficulty, etc.).

There are a couple of references to GLX. Could that be the problem?

UPDATE: I'm currently running nvidia-kernel and nvidia-glx 1.0.8178. Downgrading to a earlier versions have given the same results. I am also using xorg-x11 7.0, which I could possibly be a problem since it is quite new.

When selecting the game difficulty, I have noticed that the graphics freeze as soon as I pass the mouse over the radio buttons. I don't even have to click anything. I did manage to get past this part by using the xorg-x11 OpenGL (I ran "eselect opengl set xorg-x11"), but it is unbearably slow and I haven't been able to duplicate it (usually it just crashes as soon as you click on a menu item).

In what mode did you run civ4 in winxp? win2k? Do you use nocd pach? Did you set nvidia extentions "on" in p2p menu?

I followed the instructions from the Cedega 5.1 release notes:
# This game must be installed in Windows 98 compatiblity mode to ensure that a number of required DLLs are installed.
# Users MUST choose to accept the installation of DirectX 9.0C to play this game. Please carefully read the associated EULA and only accept if you meet all DirectX license requirements. Note that the DirectX installer prompt may be obscured by an incorrectly drawn installer window.
# This game must be run in Windows XP compatibility mode to pass copy protection.
# The 1.52 game patch is highly recommended as it resolves a number of gameplay and performance issues.
# The background on the loading screen may not always be displayed properly.
# The game will warn about being unable to start voice capture unless Full Duplex mode is properly configured in cedega and for your sound system.
# Medium or low detail is recommeded particularly later in the game to improve performance.
# ATI users should disable VBO for this title.
As the instructions say, I installed in win98 mode and play in winxp mode. I have tried different modes but they don't make any difference. I am using a nocd patch (my drive is dodgy and can't read the disc properly). I don't see any Nvidia extensions in the Cedega GUI. Were they removed in 5.1?

I've also tried directions from here. They make no difference.

It sounds like that may be slightly differeny problem. Can you still see your units overtop the black? Can you move units and build cities? You should be able to enable cheats and then "reveal whole map." I'm pretty sure the latest patch fixed it. If you havn't tried it then put the "real" civ4 exe back and update. (then use the no-cd for version 1.05 or whatever it is) I read a thread where they decided it was completely a software problem. At first people blammed hardware, "update your drivers," but latter Pyerun found the XML thing.

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=137475
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthrea ... 231&page=2

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=133056
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=133680

There are a couple other solutions now but they all modify the python or XML. If one way didn't work try their other solutions.(like the last link,
\assets\XML\Terrain\Civ4TerrainSettings.xml
<bTerrainShader>0</bTerrainShader>
)

Just to make sure we're talking about the same thing, the problem I had (on windows) looked just like the screenshots you can find at the first link and here, http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthrea ... ost3214694 . There is another problem that I've heard that's similar to the black terrain error. Also, I'm pretty sure the missing "heads" has nothing to do w/ black terrain. Some people have the problems indipendent of each other. (actually, I'm not sure there's a fix for the heads at all)

Hi Yama,

First.. i think you have an Radion-ATI -Card ... then forget the nvidia-thing.. i thinke the nvidia-buttons are hiding for you.

Second. I Install Civ in Win XP Mode on Cedega and Play in Cedega-Mode it works fine. I install the 1.52 Patch.. also in Win xp monde... and i change the ~/.cedega/Civ*/c_drive/My\ Dokuments/My\ Games/Sid*/Civilisation.ini

I did this:
  • 5. Run the game once, exit (close the 3 popups then hit esc), then edit your CivilizationIV.INI file
    - You will find it in ~/.cedega/civ4/c_drive/My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4
    - EnableVoice = 0 (fixes the 3 popups in main menu)
    - GUIManagedTextures = 1 (fixes the not-showing-text issue)
Quelle

The Game works with all Settings on Low verry well.

My problem is different. When the graphics freeze, the image is still shown fully. However, if I do something which obscures the window (e.g. move another window over it or minimise it), the bits which were obscured turn completely black. The freeze occurs even before the game is generated, so there's no map or units. The music continues to play, but the CPU utilisation of the wine process drops to almost nil, indicating that the graphics aren't being rendered at all.
sh00ter wrote:nvidia extentions are in Graphics->NV_VAR
I had to clear out my ~/.cedega directory, but I finally see that option. Playing with various combinations of options on the Graphics page doesn't seem to make any difference.
ChrisJumper wrote:First.. i think you have an Radion-ATI -Card ... then forget the nvidia-thing.. i thinke the nvidia-buttons are hiding for you.
Nope, it's an Nvidia card, with Nvidia drivers (the xorg-x11 nv driver doesn't do 3D well).

Another thing I forgot to mention: the installation of DirectX freezes when I tell it to reboot the computer. I have to kill it and then start the Civ4 installation.

Thanks for the help, guys.

After lots of reading and experimentation, I finally managed to get Civ4 going. The solution is to use a 24 bit colour depth for the X server. I'm surprised that this hasn't been noted anywhere (unless I missed it). Transgaming should mention it in a FAQ or something.

There are two problems that I am still experiencing:
  • 1. Sometimes when I load a game, the entire map is visible (no fog of war). This normally rectifies itself the next turn.
    2. The information displayed below the cities on the map (saying their name, what they're producing, etc.) is replaced by a series of cyan (light blue) squares. The recommended fix for this is to set GUIManagedTextures = 1 in the CivilizationIV.ini file. However, this doesn't solve the problem for me.

Hi,

The solution for cities names: Uncheck Vertex Shaders and choose "Yes" to Check Program (If you don't do this, the game will be slow). It works for me, but the map is still revealed (I see trees and rivers in black). Someone knows how to fix my latest problem with Civ4?! I have a Geforce4 MX 4000.

Thanks

Thank you! This works brilliantly!

I don't see a "Check Program" option, but I set "Fixed Program" to Yes. Is that what you mean?

I'm not experiencing that problem. The closest thing I can find to what you describing is the page 1veedo linked to earlier in the thread. I might possibly be an MX-related issue (the Geforce4 MX is in fact an upgraded Geforce2 and bears little resemblance to the real Geforce4). Are you running the latest Nvidia kernel and GLX drivers?

Has anyone gotten this to work on a widescreen resolution? I finally got it working with Cedega (it was installing the updates to the wrong directory). The game runs now, but only on 4:3 resolutions. I can only change it between 1024x768 and 1280x1024 in game, and editing the .ini file to any other setting has no effect. On the plus side, the game runs amazingly well, all the detail settings are maxed and there are no hiccups.
