Civilization IV possible?

  • Quote

Post by Mallow005 » Thu Oct 27, 2005 9:45 am

I was wondering if anyone got Civ IV to work under cedega. I think it uses some kind of Direct X that isn't available from Microsoft since it's from their devel kit? Can that be used when installed with cedega? Has anyone tried it yet???

As the game is quite new, I do not think that it is already supported by cedega. But take a look at their webpage (http://www.transgaming.com).

You will find there a list with all supported games and also information how well the gaming is running under linux.

Generally (I now that many people will know disagree with him), I recommend playing windows games in windows and linux games in linux.

Would be awesome, though not likely, I understand Civ3 ran very poorly if at all. That said there may be some hope, seems a Mac port is in the works for Civ3 and Civ4. I have no idea what Mac emulation is out there.

Civ IV is completely unlike Civ III. The code base is almost completely rewritten and uses python and XML scripting. It's also all in 3D. I'm sure there are enough civies to vote it popular on transgaming, then again guild wars isn't even perfect yet.

well this game's 3d engine isn't all that, the system requirements are "1 GHz CPU, 256MB RAM, and a 32MB video card with hardware transform and lighting capabilities.", which doesn't say anything about pixel shaders and other fancy features that can be hard to emulate. Also I've heard people running this on windows98, I wouldn't give up hope of seing this working in cedega or even directxwine fairly fast.

//edit 1

"The Graphics Engine Civilization IV will be using is the NDL's Gamebryo 3D graphics engine. Firaxis' PC hit, Sid Meier's Pirates! also uses it.", and if I remember correctly pirates does work in some emulators.

wine is not an emulator!

That's all very well and good, but even windows users are having problems with DirectX with civ 4. Plus, even in windows on my decent machine that plays half-life 2 on med-high settings at 1024x768 gets slow with civ 4 with graphics on med-high.

Looks like people at transgaming are waiting for cedega 5, which comes out in 7 days. Why are there not many civ fans on this board???

from what I've seen nobody's having problems with the directx part, it's the memory leaking that's getting to people.

and I know very well wine isn't an emulator, it was a quote from someone else.

I know , but if you guys are referring to my post, I stand by my assertion that mac emulation would be "emulation."

I'd like to play Civ IV. Not surprisingly, the current version of wine (20050725-r1) crashes during directx part of the game install.

I'd be interested if anyone has gotten Civ 4 to work on Gentoo. Windows isn't an option for me.

EDIT:
I found the TransGaming Cedega Civilization IV wiki. it's not currently supported, but apparently the installer is working.. lol..

That is a really old version of wine. Give it a try with a more recent version. Wine-0.9.3 is the current latest version, I don't know if it is in portage yet though. Since July there has been a lot of wine installer work, so it is possible that it may at least install in wine, and maybe even run since the dx9 code in newer wine versions is improving continuously.

directxwine and cedega both run pirates perfectly, and that's based on the same rendering engine. It shouldn't be impossible to get it to run, but it most likely will require some work. So give it a bit of time and I'm sure we'll see support for it "soon enough" :)

"Soon enough" would have been two days after release

And for the hardware needs: my sister tried it on a Pentium 4 2.5 GHz, 256 MB RAM under control of the evil empire. After 10 minutes of trying to get the initial map rendered she quit the game in task manager (yeah, sometimes they accept something you tell them  )

I really wouldn't consider a 2.5 GHz P4 with a meager 256mb of ram to run the latest and greatest well. Well ok she meets the requirment there but does she have at least a ATI 9800 or equivalent??
System Specs:
Athlon 64 3200+ Venice Core@2400MHz
MSI K8N Neo4/SLI
Gigabyte Radeon X800 256mb PCIe
2gb Corsair XMS Dual Channel DDR400
250gb Western Digital SATA 3/gb

256MB isn't going to run it at all with any GFX card it being the memory hog it is.

I gave it a shot.. same thing... it tries to install DX9 during install and fails.

Look in the wine registry with regedit, I think there's a setting in there that lets you specify what DirectX version wine will fake having installed. It should already be set to DX9 though. Anyway, that doesn't mean the game won't run. If you can, install it on a windows partition and copy it over and then try running it.

If I remember correctly, there is an option in Civ4 to use OpenGL instead of DirectX. I can't remember for sure, nor can I get into windows to check it out again right now. But I am pretty sure there was.

Doesn't it always use OpenGL for rendering? IIRC it does. DirectX doesn't limit to just Direct3D, you know.

The biggest problem with Civ4 seems to be SafeDisc 4.6 copy protection. And also MSXML support will be needed. So I think it may take a while to get Civ4 working on cedega...

I did some research and the the current version is infact 9.0

Code: Select all

[Software\\Microsoft\\DirectX] 1134688869
"Version"="4.09.00.0903"
And installing in windows isn't an option for me. I don't have a window's computer at my disposal. I've been M$ free for over 2 years.

I bought Civ4 on Direct2Drive.com So I might not have the safedisc issue.

Thank you all for the advice. I'll keep hammering away at this.

With Wine-0.9.2 the install fails for me just at the end. It manages to copy all files but it then crashes.

did it try to install dx9? I'm assuming you are installing from original disks? (I bought mine on direct2drive so my milage may vary)
