What's the best PCI video chipset for the fastest XWindows?

Hello,

What's the fastest PCI video chip set (and some brands which use this chipset) to run X Windows? For which chipset is the most optimized and HW accelerated driver?

I have now good old S3 DX, but I wonder if there are better chipsets out with better HW acceleration?

Thanks!

Jos

Im using a geforce4 440mx, and it's reasonably fast.

ATI also has several PCI versions of the radeon series, the highest i heard of in PCI is the 9000.

I can't speak as an authority on PCI, but assuming they are even vaguely like the AGP versions in terms of relative perfocmance, take the ATI - the gf4mx is bad, really bad. (and the 9000 is quite o/c-able if you want that extra performance)

pci is noticeably slower than AGP, the X (e.g. 8X agp) amount of the AGP port and card is how many times faster the bus is than pci, i would seriously consider investing in a new computer, possibly a home built one, that has an agp port if you are going to play any game from the past 4 years.

computers are really cheap now, maybe upgrading could be the better choice.
here for 500 euro you can have a athlon 2000+/256mb/40go/geforce 4 mx ....
but sometimes it's fun to play with older computer :)

You are talking 3d though aren't you? (The guy is upgrading his s3 card, I wonder if he is talking 3d too)
I have read more than once that for 2d work, AGP and PCI don't make a lot of difference. The chip itself and the driver count there. Even in 3d the difference starts only when textures get so large that they need the ram of the motherboard in addition to their own. The latter is of course true for most modern games, but Pre QIII should run pretty well on a PCI card at not too high res. And again: for 2d????
