Hello Guys,

i have a laptop with 1GB of RAM but only 938 MB recognized, i have gentoo-sources (2.6.15-r1) inbstalled , but i cannot find the HIGHMEM Option in the kernel. Is this option removed in he new kernel versions ? If tried many configs and with no personal .config - File but the option is not available

thx for the answers , sebulba128[/code]

'make menuconfig', search for highmem using '/' and typing in HIGHMEM. Most likely you'll find it under 'Processor type and features'.

Ummmm
For AMD64 chips and running a 64 bit kernel, no highmem is needed.

However, there may be a BIOS otion for remapping memory. I believe that is what may be happening to you.

Some memory might be reserved for the graphic card.

and you are using a 64bit kernel?

Memory: 1027964k/1048256k available (1947k kernel code, 19612k reserved, 943k data, 156k init

says my 64bit kernel without any 'highmem' or other 32bit hacks kernel (2.6.16-rc1, but this is true for all kernels since 2.6.13-somewhat)

Your BIOS might need some memory adresses for IRQ's. usually it takes a range above the used memory, but on some boards (I'v had the same with my Tyan K7X pro dual Athlon board) map it just below 1 GB. So you lose a bit of memory there.

MSI K8N Neo4 FI
Geil Ultra-X PC3200 400MHz CL2 5-2-2 DDR 2x512 GB
Asus 6600 Silence GFX
Watercooling (I just love the silence :) )
