OK.. I thought I'd give this a try since my brother bought the game. I used ssh to tar up his game directory and then copy it to my computer.

Though various errors, I was able to determine that I also needed to copy these files to my Civilization 4 directory

c:\windows\system32\MSVCP71.dll
c:\windows\system32\MSVCR71.dll
c:\windows\system32\D3DX9_26.DLL
c:\windows\system32\bootvid.dll
c:\windows\system32\hal.dll
c:\windows\system32\kdcom.dll
c:\windows\System Cache\i386\ntoskrnl.exe

and now I'm stuck on wine page faults.

Code: Select all

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0xffdff020 at address 0x4094d0c5 (thread 000d), starting debugger...

The files
c:\windows\system32\bootvid.dll
c:\windows\system32\hal.dll
c:\windows\system32\kdcom.dll
c:\windows\System Cache\i386\ntoskrnl.exe
are all related to copy protection.
Apply the 1.09 patch and search for a nocd crack. Then delete the 4 files.

I haven't been able to install the patch either (InstallShield issue), however when trying to get the demo of Civ4 running (no copy protection) the game refuses to start due to problems with MSXML. As far as I know there's been no implementation of MSXML in Wine or Cedega, and installing MSXML packages direcly from MS just replaces one problem with another. In other words, until someone's solved the XML problem, getting rid of the copy protection won't do much good, as far as I can see anyways...

Wine-20050830 from the CVS tree. Noted changes include:

* A lot more theming support.
* Many improvements to the various crypto dlls.
* More LDAP support.
* Beginnings of an MSXML implementation.
* Better MSHTML support.
* Emulated version now set to Windows 2000 by default.
* Direct3D fixes and improvements.
* Lots of bug fixes.
There is "some" support there, it just hasn't had time to mature yet.

Well.. I wouldn't call 4 months (closer to 3.5 months to the release of 0.9.3) "real old"... but it's definately a start.

in wine development now it kinda is ;), they've been pushing hard to get ready for 1.0, and a massive amount of patches has made it in :)

Same here. I hope they will make native port of civ4 to linux but still it would be great to get civ4 working on cedega/wine
The idea isn't about how do you see or hear it, it's about how do you experience it...

If you have Cedega, the game already works - clicky

Some random crashes for me using this method, otherwise all works fine

What about performance compared to Windows? Does it work on ATI? What about free dx9-wine?

I tried it with Cedega 5 after following the more comprehensive guide posted on the Transgaming forums. It starts fine and I'm able to orientate myself in the menus but I get a black screen when changing character (leader) or starting a new game. I guess It's an ATI problem as usual as most nVidia users following that guide managed to play the game though it may crash sometimes if you have graphics on higher than "low". It's also said that it runs even better than Civ3.

Performance seemed to be roughly equal to windows - I have had it slow down significantly during a game - probably just the amount of stuff I had showing at the time that did that...

ATI seems to be a problem at the moment - don't think anyone on the TG has it going currently

Very true - mine has crashed (eventually) each time i've played it - it has lasted over 2 hours with me though

Runs just as well as Civ3 on my machine (P4 3.0Ghz, 2560mb RAM, GeForce 6600GT (PCIe)

A "me too" post - Civ4 works without a no-cd patch, so long as you're patched to v 1.52, on cedega 5.0.3. Everything works perfectly, with graphics settings on high, though I haven't tried a multiplayer game yet. I have had one crash so far, but not sure what caused it.

- Click Install button in Cedega
- Enter something like civ4 for Game Title
- Select setup.exe from the first CD for the Installer
- Use winXP for Windows version in Advanced tab->Options
- Skip DirectX setup

2. Install DirectX from the 1st CD
- Click Install button in Cedega
- Select civ4 Game Title
- Browse your first civ4 CD and select DirectX9/DXSETUP.EXE for the Installer

3. Install MSI in civ4's Cedega folder
- You can get it there: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=CEBBACD8-C094-4255-B702-DE3BB768148F

- To make it easier, copy this file in ~/.cedega/civ4/c_drive/windows/system32
- Click install button in Cedega
- Select your civ4 folder
- Installer is ~/.cedega/civ4/c_drive/windows/system32/msiexec.exe
- In Advanced tab -> Options -> command line options: /i msxml3.msi

5. Copy oleaut32.dll, msvcr71.dll, msvcp71.dll to your civ4 executable folder
- copy them in: ~/.cedega/civ4/c_drive/Program Files/Firaxis Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4
- You can get them there:
- http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?oleaut32
- http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcr71
- http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?msvcp71

6. Delete the temporary civ4 setup folder
- Delete the folder {...} in: ~/.cedega/civ4/c_drive/Program Files/InstallShield Installation Information

7. Install patch v1.52 in Cedega
- You can get it there: http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/downloads.htm
- Click Install button in Cedega
- Select civ4 Game Title
- Select Civ4Patch1.52.exe for the Installer

- If you've done everything right, you don't need the no-dvd/cd patch, it works !!!! -

8. Run the game once, exit, then edit your CivilizationIV.INI file
- You will find it in ~/.cedega/civ4/c_drive/My Documents/My Games/Sid Meier's Civilization 4
- Set EnableVoice = 0 (fixes the 3 popups in main menu)
- Set GUIManagedTextures = 1 (fixes the not-showing-text issue)

Have fun !

This sounds like a problem I had with Windows. Some of the information at the civ forums suggest drivers but their conclusion was that it's not a hardware problem.

The fix is to basically reveal the whole map. In the python scripts you can set fishing/mining/starting advances to "reveal whole map." You still get fog of war, of course. The only downside is that you dont get to explore or anything and ...I hate the fix.

Go into assets/XML/technologies and open up Civ4TechInfos.xml. Replace all <bMapVisible>0</bMapVisible> with <bMapVisible>1</bMapVisible> and see if that doesn't work. There are other fixes but that was the only one that worked for me.

It's called the black map, look it up at the civ forums if that doesn't work for you.

(heh I want to play civ over here w/ my video card but mesa is masked -- along with all of its dependencies, "Modularized X, upstream release candidates.")

Thanks InsaneHamster, that worked superbly for me (once I realised I set the default installation profile to WinXP and had to change it for steps 3 and 4 :oops: )

I'm so close to having civilization run on wine (not cedega).

http://1veedo.homelinux.com/misc/screen ... start1.png
http://1veedo.homelinux.com/misc/screen ... start2.png

But it errors, http://1veedo.homelinux.com/misc/civlog.bz2

http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=4036
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=4325

I would take out my graphics card and put it in the windows computer but if I do that, america's army and most importantly, BZFlag wouldn't run -- because my built in video card doesn't support Linux :(

Heh, I'd use cedega but mesa (and all its dependencies) are masked.

Im having lots of problems to get this game run. I havent been able to install v1.52 patch in any way, not in the win98 mode, not in winxp. It always says me:

Code: Select all

Error Number: 0x80040706
Description: Object refrerence not set

Setup will now terminate
Only way I have managed to get this game runnin has been 1.09 patch and no-cd patch. But when I start a new game screen always goes black and game crashes. Im having AMD64 with x86_84 environment and nvidia geforce 6600GT with 8178 driver. And I got Cedega 5.0.3. I even tried removing and reinstalling Cedega but it didn't help anyway.

@trinity

I think a Geforce2 is too low. A friend Play Civ4 with a Geforce 4 and 64MB but its slow and the units dont move.
My experience with the geforce 4, 124 MB and 512 Mb Ram you can play small maps without problems (i played with windows). But if you want to play Large Maps.. with 8-14 Players the game is nearly unplayable.. (if you can see the worldmap. At the starts there is no problem).

@all

I cant play civ IV on my gentoo :(
I use Cedega 5.0.3 an install it like the how to on the civ4linux.com

There is a new howto for a Install with cedega in win98 mode. With this you dont need the handcraft fot the the MS-XML think.
http://www.civ4linux.com/forum/viewtopi ... 1843df0ce6

But it dont work for me :( I cann install all.. and the Patches to. If i start "Civ IV" the booting-Screen of the game cames up. ... for 10 seconds and than nothing happens... i see that my cpu-monitoring gos on 70 percent an brake down... nothing happens. In the shell are the Error Messages "0003 Bad... Client ignore... some hexnumber..."

But i try to play it in root mode... because the install brake down by a user installation.

Good Luck for install!
