you guys could edit /etc/rc.conf and set DISPLAYMANAGER to 'elogin' or 'entrance' depending on which you want ...

then just run `rc-update add xdm default` and `/etc/init.d/xdm start`
I have tried this, after installing entrance. Unfortunately, xdm starts instead. Can anyone suggest why?
Thanks,
Milo.

I guess this is the best thread to "use", instead of making my own.
I'm using the E17 iconbar (only), and it's almost like I want it, with one minor detail: there's a damn 1px black border around it!
I've tried creating my own bits.db in etcher, but the border is still there.
What I'm trying to do?

A small OSX iconbar. I'm not one of the OSX freaks, but it's kinda nice IMHO.
Anyone? :)

The answer, it seems, is re-emerge xfree.

When is E17 coming out anyways? beyond the CVS version???

Like... does anyone here know any inside information on a release period or release date?

Just curious :D

so, I have made progress:
my new iconbar works perfectly.
I have made a new theme to go with it
this had some inexpected results, both in the good and in the bad.

bad: I wanted my theme to be transparent to match the iconbar, etcher shows it as tranparent , but in enlightenment it's not

very bad: the focus problem has gone crazy! sice changing theme I can hardly move a window without losing it off-screen

very good: the shading bug has gone away!

I think that it has to do with using the same border bits for shaded and unshaded windows... must investigate further

by the way, here's a screenshot

I talked with raster (!!!), he says that semi-transparent borders are not yet supported, and I didn't have the nerve to ask him if they would be in the future (I'd guess they will)

anyways here is a shot of some improvements I've done to the theme

I'm alittle confused as to how I get this started. I did

Code: Select all

ACCEPT-KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge enlightenment-cvs
and it all compiled fine, now haw am I to go about starting it exactly. I tried running elogin and entrance which give me an error of

Code: Select all

no DISPLAY variable set
or something. If I run elogind, elogin comes up, but it only lets me log into fluxbox or windowmaker.
anybody know how I go about this?

Ok, I have e17 up and running fine, but I have a few questions:

1. I want to have gkrellm start up with e17, but im not sure how. I didnt have an .xinitrc file in my home dir, so I created one and put:

Code: Select all

gkrellm2&
in it. But, this didnt help. Anyone know how this might be accomplished.

2. Also, I've noticed that there's a line at y-value 84 of my desktop that all the windows snap to, and it's kind of annoying. Help on this would be nice too.

Thanks,
Phil

Can be set up as per most WM's ...add /usr/bin/enlightenment-0.17 (depends on which ebuild ver our using I noticed the most recent apears to add link to /usr/bin) to /home/"yourhomedirhere"/.xinitrc file or you can create a session for k/x/gdm under /etc/X11/Sessions just create a file called E17 and add /usr/bin/enlightenment-0.17

and all should be go :)

Thanks to those of you who posted valuable information in this thread and to the ebuild :) I have been able to give e17 a try. WOW it looks pretty damn cool I can tell when e17 is finally released (seems like I've been waiting forever) It's going to be the only wm worth using :D. Also the default window decorations are very pretty is there a theme like this for e16?

Edit: however due to the fact there seems to be a bug concerning shaded windows and a few other things I think I will stick with fluxbox for the time being :).

What do you guys think about e17 default theme, i mean the default borders? i've tried quite a few other themes, tried to create my own myself but never had any understanding with etcher and at the end of the day i still love the theme that come with the source. do you have any preference?

another thing anyone knows how to make e17 to use X's cursors instead of the default ones?

The best team I've ever tried was the stock theme with e16.

It's too bad that e16 doesn't build with all this new GNOME2 stuff. I miss that theme.

i emerged it all and it appears to be working. but when i load e17 the menus are extremely flaky. sometimes the menu works and when i move the cursor over the menu items, they become highlighted. sometimes it doesnt. ive only managed to have the menus actually work once (where they'd open up an app).

the first app i tried opening was eterm and i used that to launch apps because after i launched eterm, the menus stopped working.

any app that i opened in e17 would crash and burn shortly after.

btw, the only button that worked perfectly on the menu was exit (or logout, i dont recall).

anyone else have this problem?

ryan

Sounds like you're logged in as root.

I created a new user, configured /home/user/.e subfolders and logged in.

No more disappearing menu's!

i believe if you checked your ctrl alt F1, you'd see an error about efsd and fam... you probably need to

Code: Select all

/etc/init.d/fam start
and then try starting E17... that ought to do the trick. I haven't been using E17 as my major WM yet because i still find it very buggy/choppy IMHO. Can't wait for the final release however, and hopefully this computer will be able to handle the prettyness ;)

define "configured /home/user/.e subfolders". not sure what you meant by that.

also, i never run X as root. ever. esp an unstable gui ;)

e17 is fast though. super fast. i type startx and *blip* it's up. i'm amazed... i just wish it would work... please help!

Just out of curiosity if you do a ps -A is efsd running ...it should startup on the launch of e17 but you never know...and that would cause the issues your having also .....

FIXED:

Given the GL errors, I checked into my nvidia driver setup. Sure enough, something was a bit futzed. A quick re-emerge of the latest drivers fixed it :)

hmm, using the ebuild, evas dies as such:
