Phantom Updates; emerge won't update

  • Quote

Weird. I was running "emerge --update --deep world" when I ran out of disk space. I still had about ten more emerges to go. I deleted /var/tmp/portage/* and /usr/portage/distfiles/* and then did "emerge sync". That went okay, but then I tried to run "emerge --update --deep world" again. There was only one update. What happened to all the others?

I remember that mozilla (and firefox) was one of the updates, so I ran "emerge search mozilla" and, sure enough, it says that there's a newer ebuild than what I have installed, yet it's not there when I "emerge --update --deep world"! Das schmeckt mir nicht so gut.

Is mozilla still in your /var/lib/world file?

Maybe portage was trying to modify the world file when you ran out of disk space.

I guess this is another argument for having PORTAGE_TMPDIR, /usr and /var on separate partitions.

In any case, I guess this answers your question as to why things are not updated with an emerge -u world...
