Showing ID3 tags from audio streams using a CLI player

Post by ruud » Fri Apr 29, 2005 8:39 pm

I have been searching a long time for a CLI player which plays audio streams AND show the ID3 tags. I know that the mpg123 module in xmms can do it, and so do a few other players. It's just that I can't find the specific code that actualy reads the tags. The program needs to be command-line because I need it for a jukebox program with web front-end. So, any idea's on this?

That is one thing, but not quite what I'm looking for. All the program has to do is play a stream and show the tag on stdout. If I didn't have such a hard time ripping the code out that I need I'd have done it a long time ago. But we are getting to close :)

Well, it *does *do that, but a little more complicated.
When mpd is running, and the files are in the mpd db, you
can just do

Code: Select all

mpc add [songname]
and then, when it is playing, type

Code: Select all

mpc
and it will give id3tag info.
You can even change the format, as a field of mpc (check man mpc)
i.e.

Code: Select all

mpc --format "%album% %artist%"

I know all that, but the jukebox program that I'm using doesn't work that way. The way it work's is like this: in the config file you tell it the command to use with a certain filetype (mp3, ogg) to play. And the song title and all that is put in a database once and then read out; so I already have to change that (or not). To cut a long story short, it would take a massive rewrite to just get that in there.
