Black screen with new ati-drivers, xorg 6.8.2-r1

The video card is a Mobile X600 with 128MB RAM. This card is supported by the ati-drivers.
I emerged xorg and the new ati-drivers (8.10.19) and I run the fglxconfig. I am also loading the intel-agp and agpgart module, and I am running kernel 2.6.11
When I run startx I get a black screen. I can not find any error in the log file
dmesg, reports a problem with mtrr.

From what I read I have configured the X server so that it does not use the internal agp module. Initially, it was using it, but the same thing.

The notebook came with a 15.4'' widescreen monitor which support 1280x800, but in the xorg.conf file I have 1024x768 and 24 depth. If the black screen issue is fixed, can I go up to 1280x800 resolution?

I do not know the refresh rates of the monitor nor the modlines, but the X server does not complain about them

When I used the radeon driver, and I run startx I got a picture but it was really ugly.

Can someone help me?

Does your input freeze up, or can you still exit from the invoked startx?

No, it does not freeze up. I press alt+ctrl+Backspace and I kill the server.
This is something new, people have said on this forum that they had to reboot the system.
No I don't have to do this. If I press alt+ctrl+F* I can switch to other console. The system is responsive, I just have a black screen

I used the gtf program to file in informations for the Modeline
I added only two resolution 1280X800 and 1204X768. Both of them are supported by my monitor, but in the log I read that 1280X800 is not used because the width is too large for virtual screen!!! What is this?

In the xorg.conf file I have
Option "MonitorLayout" "AUTO,NONE"
Option "HSync2" "unspecified"
Option VRefresh2" "unspecified:

Could this be the problem? What should I put there?

When I was running startx, I was getting the next error in the dmesg
mtrr: base(0xd0000000) is not aligned on a size(0x7ff0000) boundary
[fglrx:firegl_addmap] *ERROR* mtrr allocation failed (-22)

I disabled mtrr support in the kernel, I set
Option "mtrr" "off" in xorg.conf
and the message in dmesg is gone.
Still, I am getting a black screen
Could it be that X600 is PCI express video card? But, then again I am running 2.6.11 kernel which has suport for this kind of PCI cards.

Try setting this to "no" in your xorg.conf

Code: Select all

Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "yes"
You're not afraid of the dark are you?

Thank you for participating
I tried this it did not work. What surprises me is that everybody who gets a black screen, his/her system alse hangs and has to reboot it. I do not have this.

Is it possible to get more debug output from X. Anything that will tell me what is X doing when I get the black screen

255 people have read my post and only two said something!

If I am reporting a problem that has already being solved, I apologize and I kindly request for the link.
I do not know what else to do to track down the problem.
I am thinking of using an external monitor, just to check if there is a problem with the monitor or with the driver.

OK, I have a usefull information

I plugged an external monitor and I changed the Option "MonitorLayout" "AUTO, NONE" to "CRT, CRT"

When I run startx, I saw the image on the external monitor!!
Also, I had connected the computer to the TV, through the s-video output, and again I saw the image on the TV.

So, I need to give the correct argument to the MonitorLayout option.
What should I put there? I tried "AUTO, AUTO", but it did not work

I did some Googling, and I found the LVDS option.
I used it and it worked.
What is LVDS and TMDS?

On the Google I found the following:

Code: Select all

(II) RADEON(0): Primary:
 Monitor -- LVDS
 Connector -- VGA
 DAC Type -- Primary
 TMDS Type -- NONE
 DDC Type -- VGA_DDC
(II) RADEON(0): Secondary:
 Monitor -- NONE
 Connector -- None
 DAC Type -- Unknown
 TMDS Type -- NONE
 DDC Type -- NONE
But I have

Code: Select all

(II) fglrx(0): Primary head:
 Monitor -- LVDS
 Connector -- None
 DAC Type -- Unknown
 TMDS Type -- NONE
 DDC Type -- Nonw
(II) fglrx(0): Secondary head:
 Monitor -- NONE
 Connector -- VGA
 DAC Type -- Primary
 TMDS Type -- NONE
 DDC Type -- VGA_DDC
Couple of lines below it says

Code: Select all

(II) fglrx(0): Panel ID string: CRT <--------Why CRT ???
(II) fglrx(0): Panel size from BIOS: 1280x800
I am doing something wrong! Can you tell me what that is?[/code]

HI,
I´ve got an idea, dont know if you tried it already...but:
try to change this in your xorg.conf:

# **********************************************************************
# Core keyboard's InputDevice section
# **********************************************************************

Section "InputDevice"

Identifier "Keyboard1"
Driver "Keyboard"

to:-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

# **********************************************************************
# Core keyboard's InputDevice section
# **********************************************************************

Section "InputDevice"

Identifier "Keyboard1"
Driver "kbd"

......If this doesnt work, try to startx in 1280x1024 or 1280x960 resolution....mavbe its one of those problems.

------Good Luck

Thank you for your suggestion and I will try it, although the keyboard works fine (I think so, I have not tested it alot ).
The maximum resolution that I can go is 1280x800 (is a widescreen monitor)

And I was able to make it work by making the changes that I have in my previous post.

The problem is that I am seeing something in the Xorg.log about the two heads that troubles me.

What is the story with RANDR and fglrs.
In Xorg.log I read that RANDR is enabled, by when I use KDE to change the resolution it says that RANDR is not supported and I need to install a newer version of X!

Is there a solution for this problem?

Edit: Disable DGA

OK, I have one last problem:
When I set the MonitorLayout to "LVDS,AUTO" I have a picture on my laptops monitor and on the external monitor. If instead of the external monitor I connect the TV (through s-video) there is no picture. In order to fix this, I need to change the MonitorLayout to "AUTO,AUTO", where I do not have a picture on the laptop, but I have on the external monitor and of course the TV. Still, the picture that I have on the TV is flickering.

Does anybody know how can I fix this?

Here is my xorg.conf file, which was created with flgrxconfig

Hi,
I had the same problem and tried many solutions from the web. The one that fixed my problem was related to LVDS.

Background:
X uses DDC (seems to be a sort of monitor plug-and-play) to discover your monitor.
The section 'MonitorLayout "Auto,None" ' or Auto,Auto generated by fglrxconfig are related to that. Auto means that it will try a DDC discover.
Now the trick, the xorg project radeon driver worked for me and while diff'ing the log's I saw that the working radeon driver detected the monitor type "LVDS" while the fglrx driver brought up some errors.

Solution:
After adding "LVDS,NONE" instead of "AUTO,NONE" as MonitorLayout it works

Info:
Option "NoDDC" "true" you find in the internet seems not to help in my case

Configuration
my xorg.conf for a Dell inspiron 9300 with an 128 MB X300 (working)

Really? Any chance you could point me to those posts?? I have been searching for hours.
Mine goes black but is then unresponsive to ctl-alt-backspace.

In fact, I am able to run X fine the first time I do. But if I run Xfce, then exit to the console, then run KDE, for example, the second time it will always hang up in some way. Even if it's just startx'ing to xfce, exiting to console, then startx'ing xfce again.

ANY ideas will be much appreciated.

Yes, please. Snippets would be nice and removing all sections devoid the beginning, (EE), and (WW) sections would be nice from your Xorg log.

For the Xorg issues thread, the one I was posting on was sort of closed but there is another one for random Xorg errors. I'll give you the one I had because the moderator referenced the other thread at the end of that one.

foosh,
from what I have read, if X hangs it hangs because of the ATI drivers. I was not able to find a solution for this. Just in case, have you enable/disable the use of InternalAGP (you can do that in Xorg.conf file)?

chaoslord007,
if you set MonitorLayout to "LVDS, NONE" then I believe that you won't be able to use any external monitor, correct me if I am wrong. Thus, a better choice would be "LVDS,AUTO" or "LVDS,CRT"

Just looked over your guy's configs again. Make sure to disable agpgart, dri, and maybe some font stuff. It affects the nvidia drivers at least.

The LVDS part seems to screw over ATi users too...

Well, internal agpgart is disabled, but not DRI. If I do that then I can also use the radeon driver
